depends on what kind of snow driving you're doing-- 215s are too wide for effective snow traction, and 50 doesnt seem tall enough to get you thru the deep stuff.
For snows, I'd rec something on the order of 185-190 and about a 60-70 in height at minimum--the narrower and taller, the better. Why not find a set of 16 rims that will clear your brake calipers (say the OEM Bridgespokes) and stick on a set of 185/70s? Sure yr MINI might look funky, but that will certainly help with clearance issues when plowing thru snow, and 16" rims will aloow you to run taller snow tires. That's the key: narrow and tall.

absolutely true, narrower actually cuts through snow better than wide tires believe it or not. In snow, more surface area=less traction.

yeah your best bet with 17s probably wouldnt be to get giant balloon tires. same with the 16s. a 60 or 70 is incredibly tall.
granted i got 205/55/16 for winter, which are both wide and tall, a 60 or 70 would not even fit the wheels wells lowered.
maybe a 195/50 on the 17s? dont want to go too narrow ans just be stretched on there
