Service contract worth it?
Service contract worth it?
So we are going to pick up our new MCS next weekend (likely) and talking with the salesman today he informed me of a service contract I can buy for $1600 that covers basically everything except for tires for 100,000 miles. My gut tells me that this isn't worth it, but I wanted to get some opinions before we head out to pick up the car next week.
So what kinds of service/maintenance costs can I expect over the life of the car? And what all would it cover?

I have friends who always buy the contract, especially the one for a total of six years. Their rationale is that they do not want to be surprised by any big expenses for six years (two years additional) and it can be financed.
I, myself, would not.

Hello, the details of the service contract the dealer is likely selling is here. If you decide to get it try getting it cheaper, $1600 is too much. GL
It's not an extended warranty, it is an extended service. Click DrewN's link above.

My dealer quoted a price of $2400 for a four year extension [warranty] through a third party company. That's 15% of the original cost of our '06 Cooper 6. The only reason I even thought about it was that we have an automatic trans. I may shop around, but I keep hearing horror stories of people having to sue the third-party warranty companies in order to collect on a claim.

I got this one and was able to get it down to $1300, I did call every dealer in California and Nick Alexander MINI in LA qouted me $1395 (the lowest), when I called them back the FA seemed angry that they quoted that low price (hope I did not get dude in trouble) but agreed to it. Then I was at Universal MINI, buying MINI Tire Totes and mentioned to them what Nick Alexander MINI offered and they said they would beat it for $1300. Over the phone they Universal quoted me $1695. And they did put my clutch and brakes and bonnet latch as a wear parts.
