R50/53 Rear bumper removal
Rear bumper removal
I had someone clip my MCS last week on the left rear textured arch & broke the side marker. Looking for instructions to properly do this, not sure if I have to remove the whole bumper though.
I've done it once
and I can't really give you step-by-step instructions... but I can tell you it is not really difficult. There is one pair of fasteners that are a little difficult to locate, but it is not a complicated job.
I prefer to jack up the car, remove the rear wheels, and then remove the rear wheel well liners. This is done by removing all of the little expanding rivets with a philips head screwdriver and holding the outer edges of the rivets with your fingers to keep them from spinning. There are also several screws and a nut I believe up there as well that hold on the wheel well liner and the arch trim on the rear quarter panel.
After all of these items are removed, there is a screw at each of the bottom corners of your hatch opening, they are hard to miss, they are philips head. The last screw or nut that you need to remove is to the left of your exhaust as you are laying under the rear of your car with the top of your head facing the front of the vehicle. After that, I believe that it is fairly simple to just lift the bumper off. Be sure to un-plug the lights in the arches and the rear fog if you have one.
I hope this helps!

Chase has pretty well described the process-- it even matches what the Bently Publishers service manual recommends. My only comment is that it is not really necessary to remove the wheels or completely remove the wheel housing liner. Some of the screws are in tight spaces and under the rear fender trim, but the car can stay on the ground for this job.
