metal noise on left front when stopping.

06 MCSa
62K miles

i was out getting groceries and when i was on my way home, i stopped at a red light, i noticed a faint sound coming out of the front left. when i came to then next red light and pressed the brake, the sound was louder, like metal on metal. are my brake pads worn? if so, i did not get a warning light. i took the wheel off and looked around to see if something was strange, but saw nothing. it was too dark to look at the pads.

i did a search but couldn't find my exact problem. sorry if this is a repost question.

62k miles on the original brakes? pretty good i reckon.

i'd check pads carefully in the light of day.

i guess it is the pads. i only had a brake flush in feb. of 2008. they checked the pads at that time and the invoice says they were within spec. (front=5mm, rear=7mm) i am going to check them tomorrow morning. i hope its that and not something else major!!!

thanks for your reply.

Probably brake pads, they are designed to give the driver a warning by sound but it shouldnt be something that bad sounding.

A few weeks ago i was getting that noise as i decelerate, or a noise similiar. I ended up getting out and checking all my lugs with the wrench. The front left tire where the sound was coming from had very loose lugs. Maybe thats it?

i just drove it around the block and the noise isn't as bad now. i am guessing its the pads or something. once i do an assessment tomorrow morning, i will follow up with the diagnosis.

thanks to all who chimed in,
michael

so it was the pads, the fronts were barely touching metal. luckily my rotors are still nice and smooth. i thought it was strange that my sensor did not come on at all. i had no idea my pads were low. anyone else have this problem?

It's possible that the brakes were done before and the sensors were not reinstalled.
