Looking to buy a MINI. Couple of questions.

Hello to all, I am thinking about purchasing a used 2004 S w/ 50,000 miles. Hope I posted in the right section..

Couple of questions for all you mini owners:

-What type of gas will I need to use? The guys at the dealer say regular 87 is fine, my friend who owned a S (before she totaled it) said you HAVE to use premium. So I can put this issue to rest, can I use regular without having any problems?

-The one i'm looking at has run flats. can i ditch those and just put normal tires on, because I hear the runflats are around $250 per tire..ouch

The guy bought an extended warranty through crevier mini in newport for an extra $2600 which covers "everything" he said: covers engine, turbo/supercharger, transmission, drive train, cooling system, A/C, front suspension, steering, fuel system, brakes, electrical, electronic high tech components, electric power motors and solenoids at selling dealer/Crevier Mini in Newport Beach CA plus towing, roadside assistance, substitute transportation. Those are covered until 100,000 miles or 2015, whichever comes first.

Sound like a good deal? It has auto ac, leather, xenon, heated seats, sunroof, multifunction steering wheel, etc.. for $15,700.

Thanks !

The dealer doesn't know what he's talking about. You need to use premium fuel. Most of us ditch the runflats for regular tires also.

PREMIUM FOR SURE!! I kept my runflats on for now at least. I like the security in the back of my head, in case I get a flat I can get somewhere and not be stranded. Once I get my 17' Konig Feathers ...I may put some different tires on though. The runflats can be a little rough at times also, just something to note. BTW...the person at the dealership you talked doesn't have a clue..again...use PREMIUM!

It will run fine on 87 or 89, the car will make the adjustment and won't knock.

.....but......

It will run better, higher performance, on 91. 93 is overkill, but sometimes all that is available depending on the station.

I'd suggest going with the premium. It (especially the S) is a high compression engine, treat it right.

cheers,

dag

The mpg loss of using 87 octane will probably equal out the higher price of premium.(if not cost more)

There really is no good reason to use regular instead of premium. Cost is about the same. Performance is better with premium. The manual calls for premium.

Switching to non-runflats isn't an issue. I was able to get my 06 to come without runflats.
