R50/53 starting fault
starting fault
my 2002 mini will not start. cranks like mad and wont start. then maybe it will start the next day or two hours later. fault is 107 says sensor on the crank. any help. thanks john
Ok... What follows is knowledge I have gained working on a honda CBR not a MINI. What you probably have is a hall effect sensor posistion near the front of your engine next to a toothed wheel. As the wheel spins it disturbs the magnetic field created by the sensor, this disturbance creates changes in the current flow which the ECU uses to determine RPM. In the case of the CBR our SAE team actually removed a tooth from the wheel to create a very specific point in the readout to the ECU.
Anyway, its just a little electronic sensor that sits on the front of your engine, so not a big deal to replace and probably not that costly of a part. If it actually is just the sensor (which it sounds like) then it is not a big deal at all.

thanks i would like to get it to do it one more time and seperate the ecu and see if it will clear the fault. in the mean time im hoping it doesn't leave me stranded again. the dealer is over three hours away and i have been dealing with a local shop and i don't think they want to repair it they just say it wont duplicate when they try to start it a different day. thanks again. john
