Do bigger wheels = better handling?

how exactly does bigger wheels result in improved handling/grip?

I have stock 15x5.5 wheels and I'm ready for an upgrade

do bigger wheels = better handling?

will there be a noticeable difference between 15" vs 16"

or width 6" vs 7"

I want 15x6 or 15x6.5

Thanks!

Simply getting bigger wheels doesn't help with grip at all and the handling difference is negligible.

The major factors when going "plus sizing" is reducing the tire sidewall, decreasing the overall wheel/tire weight, and increasing the contact patch (width).

If you just want better grip then spend your money on nice tires and be done.

Yes, to a point. Wider wheels allow you to run wider tires which will give you more grip. Plus sizing the wheel gives you a tire with a shorter sidewall which doesn't flex as much. All that improves handling. The problem is, bigger wheels usually weigh more, which increases rotational mass and will make the steering heavier and generally reduce the handling.

The other major factor is the tire itself. You can improve your handling just by buying a sticker tire without even changing sizes.

For everyday driving, 205/50/15 or 205/50/16 are good sizes.
My daily wheels are 16x7 with 205/50/16.
My racing wheels are 15x7 with 225/45/15.

A wider wheel will reduce sidewall flex because its streches the tire more taught. Its a balance between addional wheel weight and less sidewall flex.

thanks guys!

i'm getting 15x6.5

i figure its not necessary to go any bigger than stock 15" diameter

this combo should give me the lightest possible wheels

while still improving overall grip/handling

anyone know any good wheels of this size?

i found 3 Motegi's and 1 O.Z. on tirerack, i dont like any of em

Why not go 15x7?

I have these in 16x7. Light weight and easy to clean.

Rota makes some really nice lightweight and inexpensive wheels in that size range. Konig and %Zigen also make a nice 15 inch wheel in various widths, but the cost is more than the Rota.
