I have been searching the forums here and reading all the rack threads, but am still a bit confused.

I want to carry a 18' rowing shell on my Mini. I used to carry it on a Rabbit GTI without difficulty, so I assumed a Mini would be able to handle it. However now that I actually have the car, it is appears that none of the available rack systems allow putting the two racks very far apart. The choice seems to be between systems like the Thule which must go in the door opening, or the Mini rack which can only be mounted in one prepared spot. Both put the bars pretty close together, too close to be desirable for my purposes (also too close for carrying 2x4's and sheets of plywood, what were they ever thinking?).

Are there any rack systems available that allows mounting the bars anywhere along the roof?
