Bad battery/alternator indicator lamps

I noticed that there is a separate indicator light for a bad battery vs. a bad alternator. Does anybody know how the car tests for these scenarios?

Most cars combine these into one "Battery" warning light.

Anybody???

The good alternator would be 14.4V at charging. Less would mean bad alternator. The battery would put out 12V at consumption, less means battery.
