What to look for

There are a few threads on replacing the front control arm bushings. What I need to know is what to look for in regards to 1-what the car feels like on the road, and 2-what are the visual clues to look for that indicate the bushings need to be replaced.

If you can jack up the front of your car onto jack stands, pull on the front wheel. If there is movement, you should replace them. The bushing holds the wheel from moving forwards/backwards. Also, when your driving slow and tap your brakes hard and it feels like the front wheels are moving towards you, they need to be replaced.

Part of why I am asking is that sometimes under acceleration (especially when going uphill) I get a slight shimmy in the steering wheel. I have had the car on ramps, and noticed some daylight through the bushing on the drivers side. I have not seen pictures of new bushings to know if they have any openings through them as I have seen on other types of bushings. I suspect the daylight is from a tear, but want to be sure before going through the trouble of replacing them. Thanks for your answer.
