Carbon build up Q & A

You all know that R56 are creating carbon buid up in their valves, in the stock problems/issues froum some members have posted there problems.

Here in Puerto Rico we also have the same problem, must of the cases that Mini service have seen are cars that the owner never race in them or push them to the limit.

Moms, Grandparetns, Old people, people that don't like speed etc, etc.

Most of the car like mine has less carbon build up than others,Why? I race a lot in mine.

Some people say is bad fuel or not using premiun, I am 99% fuel got nothing to do.

I believe is cause by:
1. 15,000 miles oil changes is wrong and dangerous.
(I change mine every 3,500 - 4,000 miles)

2. The other reason is the two hoses coming out of the valve cover, the first one is dropping oil into the intake, turbo, and fmic, the second one coming out from the back of the valve cover going into the intake manifold.

I think this is why we are getting the carbon build up because of excessive oil burn.

My theory is to install an oil catch can breather like this one.

The idea is to connect both hoses form the valve cover into the catch can and eliminate the one going into the intake manifold.

Sorry for my errors and my english!

Nice writeup fern! I can attest to the PCV contributing to carbon buildup and reduced performance.I've pulled my throttle body and intake manifold and found both completely coated in oil including the interior runners. There's quite a bit of oil that makes it through especially if you habitually run at high RPM's like I do. An oil catch can is a small but worthwhile investment and a must with these engines.

i've been thinking that one would be a seriously good option... i made a thread a long while back and i believe the consensus was that they weren't really required, which I thought was stupid... most boosted cars run catch cans.

It seems as though this proves true for me as well...I have pulled my alta ic boost tube off to replace it and found oil streamed in the tube. I'm considering a catch can as well...

We should get a group buy going and see who sells!

An oil catch can is the appropriate place for vapors to condense, not your intake track or engine. The catch can gives potential oil filled engine vapors a chance to separate so only clean air is sent back through the intercooler and into the engine. The catch can is clear, so at a glance, you can see if it needs emptying.

Yeah, thanks for clearing up for people what it does, but where can us R56 owners purchase one?

Oil Catch Can by Alta Mini

Supercharged engines are prone to the accumulation of an oil sludge mixture forming inside the intake tract. Oil vapor is forced out of the cylinder head and redirected through vacuum hoses into the intake stream. The oil vapor then condenses onto the inside surfaces in the intake system and especially the intercooler core. A thin film of oil coating the inside of the intercooler will insulate the air to air exchange and lower the ability of the intercooler to cool the intake air charge. The ALTA Performance catch can will hold this oily byproduct while removing it from suspension in the intake air stream. Intercooler efficiency is increased, valuable for daily driven street cars but truly a must have for track cars and those cars with higher boost supercharger pulleys.

Nobody builds one for R56, all catch can are generic or the same the difference is the hoses and fitting need it to connect it.

You don't want this in your engines air system.
