Instead of buying an ipod, I decided to go with the Archos 20GB Jukebox recorder. I got mine for $240 USD at Amazon. With the aux port installed, which I did myself, and a lighter adapter, I am jamming on the road. I recommend this player over the ipod because it's cheaper and uses a standard laptop hard drive which can be replaced/upgraded. I have to think it's more durable as well.

I have the 20gb recorder as well, Yeah, the Archos can take a tumble, I lost it while skating once, put it back together and it works fine  my g3 ipod gets better batery life though.

Check this site out for added features for it :

I have had an Archos Jukebox 20gig for some time now. It sounds decent, gets good battery life from a set of standard AA NiMH batteries, and has taken some tumbles without quitting. I also like the fact that you are not slave to any software when it comes to transferring files;, it's just another hard drive. My main gripes are that the USB1.1 transfer speed is slow and that there is no remote.

Mine sits comfortably and securely (even when cornering at insane speeds) in my parcel shelf and connects to the Aux jack I mounted in there:

The rubber corner bumpers nestle nicely in the rubber shelf liner and keep it from shifting around.

The newer Archos Recorders have USB 2.0. I keep mine on the parcel shelf and can reach down to hit the skip button without looking.

saying the 2.5" laptop drive is debatable between different people. sure, you can upgrade it, but it's bigger. that's why i love my 15GB iPod, it's tiny and has enough space for my music and backing up my laptop's drive.

I too have the Jukebox 20, USB 2.0 is nice- but I have had some problems
with it (freezing from time to time when playing or recording). The Rockbox software, tho, is a notable improvement. Highly suggest it!

I also put LiIon batteries in it (rechargable), seems to help the batt
life- also reduces how much it locks up? Maybe I'm frying it, but until
an I-Pod can record (according to my friend, it can't) my DJ sets, Archos
it is!

caio,
