New, Free, OBD and GPS Tool

Heya all,

This is my first post on these forums, although I've been lurking a bit since I ordered my first mini last September

I'm a software developer by trade and hobby, and have been working on a little tool designed to log OBD data alongside GPS data [although it can log just gps, or just obd data, but that won't do you much good].

It then can output that to a variety of mechanisms [google earth and .csv files right now, openstreetmap on the way].

A screenshot to give you an idea [clikky to take you the page giving explanations and details of what it is]:

The software itself is here: OBD GPS Logger. It runs on Linux and OSX, and Windows using cygwin. It's still relatively early in development, I strongly suggest grabbing the subversion flavor, and it's still a little techie-oriented.

I'm very open to suggestions of what people would like to see [eg, what graphs would be useful to see, what killer features it needs...]. Really, I'm not big on cars and stuff, I just found the idea of logging engine diagnostics alongside GPS data a bit too much for my inner techie to resist, when I got a new car that actually has a computer controlling the engine.

Way Cool, could you also log speed, RPM and Shift points? Thinking it would be fun to download the data of a fav road run hard and then see the details of that drive. Since I have a hard time posting attachment on NAM I'll wait for other to do more of the beta testing. Would it work if you don't have in car nav, like with my Garmin?

Speed and RPM are both logged already. In the picture there, height of the graph represents speed. If you load up the kml file in google earth, you'll see there's a separate RPM chart [but it's off by default]

Shift points, erm, not sure. I might be able to work them out, but I don't immediately see an actual "gear" data point in OBDII anywhere.

Actually, I don't support in-car nav stuff, since I don't think there's a standard way to get at it. I support gps using gpsd. Your garmin may or may not work with it, but if it emits data from the back through the USB port, then it probably does.

Head Spinning. I'll wait for someone with a Garmin to play with this and work out the details and then I'll try to follow there lead.

New version!

I posted a new version today, the biggest features added being "trips" [so you can log multiple trips [like there and back again] into a single file, and do something useful afterwards]. Minor features include sub-second accuracy and the ability to sample more than once a second.

The new trip code lets you do things like this:

[I just turned the engine off at some stoplights :-)]

Individual trips there are highlightable and showable separately. So in each screenshot, one of the "trips" shows RPM, wheras the others show speed and mpg.

Have fun,
