A few interior changes (pics)

I did a little something to the interior of my mini,
I painted the aircon rings red, speed'o and tac rings black, stereo controls red and black, wrapped the steering wheel trim in black vinyl, and added a little red pin-striping.

Any one have an opinion on it?
What could go?
What could stay?
What could be added?

Very nice job!

Nice to see some R56 interior creativity......I think it would pop even more with piano black dash......

Well done!

Are the gauge faces white instead of silver? If so I like that. I really like the black rings (might have to do the same thing ). The red really isn't my thing but I can see the appeal.

It's a little overwhelming. I think it's the pinstripe on the dash that pushes it over the line for me. I definitely like the bit on the steering wheel though.

WOW! That's one of the nicest interior mods I've seen, and I've been lurking for at least 5 years. I especially like the red rings. Exactly how did you do that? Remove them, of course? Spray can? Just seeing if I could replicate.
Anyway, they look great!
Congratulations for one of the best interior mods!

I always wanted to attempt painting the rings around the speedo, tacho and air conditioning vents(plus a few other areas). So same question here, did you uninstall everything before you sprayed? How hard was the vinyl installation on the steering wheel? That matte silver interior is driving me NUTS~

Really a top-quality job, but the striping on the checkboard is a bit much for me. Take that off, and you'd have a gorgeous interior.

I can certainly appreciate the creativity. I will echo the comments on the pinstripe on the checker panels. Seems off to me.

Hey thanks for the feed back!
The red dash pinstripes are gone already, it was a afterthought after finishing the aircon rings any ways.
the red overall may be a little cheasy but im just kicking around ideas and everything can be changed relatively easy
Ill give ya'll more info later on what and how i did it

Very cool! I like this idea a lot! My girlfriend is looking to get the chrome pieces for the rings, but I think this is still a really great alternative. Good work!

There was a lot of work getting everything off now that i think about it,
the speedo rings and the two smaller aircon rings are connected to one part, theres i think 6 torx screws holding that on, and the left and right passenger aircon rings are pretty tricky to get off.... too much to explain...
everything is not like the r53s where most everyting snaps off. there's a lot of screws and a lot of hidden snaps and whatnot.
Also all of the rim rings (speedo, aircon, door speakers) do not unclip like you would think, they are press/melted on so if you want to get them off you have to cut the melted over tabs with a razor blade to get them off. some super glue will hold them in just fine.
If enough people want it i might wright up a little thread on how to get all that stuff off.

I'm interested. Although, I was thinking of doing the round trim(around speedo, tach and air vents) using vinyl. That way I don't have to remove them. Just got to measure the width of each and cut the right width vinyl. What do you think?

That could work, but you may have a hard time getting the vinyl to fit the shape of the rings without taking them out. I found using a heat gun for vinyl helps a lot. its worth a try tho.
Im going to try and wrap my the smaller door speaker rim later this week.
ill take pics if it works.

How did you do the trim on the steering wheel?

i've been staring at this thread for hours, waiting for my account to be authorized to post replies.

heyy, my first post!

ok, so i've actually been researching this for a while now. i too, am wanting to change the spoke color on the steering wheel. i've seen one picture of someone who did it at coopergear.com. but haven't been able to grab anyone over there.

so i'm desperately interested... how did you get the steering vinyls on?
were you able to detach the silver 'panels' on the spokes, or did you just have to kind of apply the vinyl in place?

by the way, i don't have my mini yet. i've got an 09 convertible being delivered mid april, just planning ahead.
i am, however somewhat familiar with the interior of the cooper since i had an 08 convertible until recently.

I hate the look of all the light grey pieces on the interior. Your mods are exactly what I was hoping to do to mine. I've never seen it before. I would be VERY interested in a how-to.

Does anyone know how to take the plastic trim off the doors for painting?
