Ok, so maybe I'm not the "big boys" doing concourse stuff---not that I haven't been asked--but it would drive me nuts I think...course it does pay well...ok I digress.



Here is something that came out of the rain to my shop. The owner of this car had some sort of paint damage on the hood. I touched it, and it had no texture--felt like it was in the paint, and not on it. Judging by the trails, it appeared to be related to the vents in front of it.

I asked my colleague what his thoughts were, and he thought it was some sort of heat damage. The customer wanted to know if it could be improved and I answered honestly that I didn't know, but we could try.

I clayed the area and made it smoother but didn't do anything for the problem. I then masked it for my test spot.

I opted to use a PC with a white pad and Swirl.














The owner said that he's had other detailers do absolutely nothing like this change before his very eyes so he was impressed.

Process was PC on speed 5 with LC white pad and Swirl. 2 passes.
PC on speed 5 with LC white pad and Amigo 1 pass
Then BG two coats.

He bought the products on the spot to finish it off himself and couldn't wait to show his friends what he discovered.

Nice job! I took advantage of the warm weather today and washed Sabine. Just finished giving her a coat of BG topped of with Hydro. Really great stuff.

 

Thanks! Just curious, why did you top BG with Hydro? In my experience BG really doesn't look it's best until the next day and that's when I would have topped it with Hydro. IMO, you might be losing much of the BG benefit by doing Hydro too soon.

I agree with Richard, BG does tend to look better after 24 hours, even though it can be wiped off almost right away.

A question; In general, what cures faster, carnuba, or synthetic wax? Seeing that BG is a blend of both, is one or the other just taking longer to cure?

Well I think a followup question would be whether carnauba even needs to cure? Or how long do the oils and chemicals combined with the carnauba that makes it soft enough to apply take to evaporate...

The reason I suggested that BG looks better the next day is that I applied BG to my windshield as a test..and I saw no difference until the next day when I could see a definite yellow tinting in the taped off BG area. The carnauba look didn't really become noticeable until much later. Course I haven't done any formal testing to see how long it takes or whether it was there to begin with and I just didn't notice it in that lighting.

 

Good point, not likely. Must be some of the rest of the recipe gassing off.

Good advice about letting BG cure. Normally I would not have put anything over the BG, it looks amazing with just a light coat. I applied it to the whole car and then opened the boot to get the bag with my clean micro fiber cloths for buffing. When I reached in to grab one they were all wet! Seems the top on the Hydro sprayer that I had with them had come loose and leaked out about half a bottle which was now soaked up in the towels. So I figured what the heck and wiped it down with the Hydro towels before washing them. I have noticed too that an application of Hydro looks better the next day. Does it "cure" as well?

 

The polymers in Hydro require a day to crosslink and do their "thang"..so yes, Hydro does cure after 24 hours. Non polymer products like carnauba waxes behave differently. BG which is a sort of hybrid needs to be answered by Nick or Heather of DP however.
