I've read many post about how fast the pirelli run flats wear down. But how well do they grip the road and channel water?

Thanks..

I really don't think the pirelli's wear any faster than the dunlops (ok maybe a little). Both are probably going to get about 12-14000 miles if you drive "sporty" in nature. Dunlops possibly have a slight edge in wear but what it comes down to is that the runflats just don't last that long.

If you have drove other performance tires 12000 miles is not uncommon. The main problem is the runflats do not perform as well in the "stickiness" catagory and cost a bunch more.

So the point is this:

If the tire is not going to last long it better perform like a champ and not cost an arm and a leg! Runflats perform good but not like a champ.

As far as rain is concerned they do very well for a perfomance tire. They seem to channel water great also. As I get closer to 12000 I'm sure they will get slicker in the rain. I have 4600 miles on them now.

Realize also that the front tires are going to wear out long before the rears.

I drove a Cooper for four months with the 16" Dunlops(6000 miles) and have about 1200 miles on a Cooper S that I put 17" Pirellis on at 800 miles so I had the chance to drive the S with both types. I can't comment on wet weather handling but on dry roads I prefer the 17" Pirellis over the 16" Dunlops that were on the car when I bought it. I don't know why but the S seemed 'squirrely' in the same corners I had taken in the Cooper with the same 16" Dunlops. I don't know whether it is the increased hp in the S but it does seem to corner better with the 17". For the most part these are high speed corners and not sharp, diving turns you'd be doing in say autoxing and there, I would think, the 16" might have an advantage because of the increased sidewall height. IMHO.
