Interior/Exterior Racing seat belts for R56?
Last I heard about the Schroth was that they weren't able to do any testing on the R56 seats to determine whether they met the min. req's for their belts. Thus there are no "approved" belts for the 56. Some have suggested that you can do a minor mod to the belt to get it to work.
The Schroth belt is really the only one you want to go with unless you want to go with a harness bar or full cage.

Then I would suggest you stay with the stock belts. The Schroth harness is not intended to be used as a replacement for the stock belts for daily use. It is designed to be used as a track day or auto-x belt. It does limit movement in the car and makes it difficult to adjust settings in the car and it is hard to turn your head around to check for traffic.
i was expecting that answer but im not your normal mini driver...i tear it up,
the limited movement wont bother me im 6'2 and i have long arms so i dont even have to move to roll down the window
and no need to check for traffic..they cant keep up.

CG Lock
If you intend to use a racing belt for daily motoring, I suggest you take a look at the CG Lock, a simple device which attaches to the seat belt buckle. The CG Lock allows you to tighten the lower belt to whatever tension you like, while leaving operation of the upper seat belt stock. It is nearly as convenient in use as the stock belt, but provides far more support and security when underway. The CG Lock virtually eliminates sliding in the seat in response to G-Loads from cornering or braking, but has none of the hassel of a full-blown race harness. I've been using one for several months in my 07 MCS and find it a very practical and effective seatbelt upgrade, one which is also convenient for day-to-day driving. At around $50 it's a good bang for the buck.
Good luck.....!
+1.
On the other hand, if I saw someone driving around the street with a 4-point harness, I don't know if I'd die laughing or pull over and get out of the way. A Schroth is for the track, if you're driving like you need a Schroth on the street, I (and more importantly my kids) don't want to be anywhere near you....
Driving with a four point on the street should be a wonderful ticket magnet--the Schroth is street legal, but good luck telling the police that...
thanks for your concern
i am equally concertned with safty and looks
if i wasnt concerned with saftey id be taking out all the seat belts and putting a lazy boy in there....picture that and try not laughing
dont come to panama city florida and you will have no worries about my driving...

let's just say I've made. Mistakes and learned from them. I never go beyond wat I can handle. On or off the track. Anyone drift their mini yet... It's pretty fun and easy on a dirt road...
Any comments to that?
I'm only twenty, and I drove like a fool just a year ago... a month in this law enforcement job has changed that... I don't want to end up like mush.

Anyway, a full fledged racing harness for the R56 would be sweet.... I don't think I trust that harness connected to the headrest bars.... would those hold in an accident? I don't think those were engineered to take that kind of force...
That is a schroth 4 point harness. It isn't connnected to the headrest bars, the straps go through the bars and connect into the rear selt belt locks. Not as good as a 5 or 6 point harness, but it's a very nice, integrated setup, great for HPDE's, autocross and track days, but not a true competition harness.
God, I just got out of Hondas and this is happening to MINIS?
It's like putting a roll cage in your daily driver. It's perfect for looking cool, until you get hit and smash your skull open in the impact.
Where are these points going to mount safely on a daily driver? Would modifying a harness from a different application lead to safety concerns?
It's not a good time when your seat belt snaps in a collision and sends you flying because it wasn't properly mounted.
I'm pretty sure there's no street driving that requires the use of this kind of harness, unless you're looking for a bad *** racer boy image.
This is the kind of thing I come down on because it's a hazard more than a benefit.

OK, so...speaking to the super-safety conscious on here, I'm interested in getting a set for my R56 for some of the super-twisties our club runs. I understand the mod thing - and if that's what you want, that's your perogative! I think I hurt my shoulders (impingement) the last time I did it with just the stock 3point belt, and the dual belts look like they'd be more comfortable. Am I nuts? And aside from constantly checking the Schroth website can I find out if they've produced them for the R56? But since I'm not using these on a track, I'd rather have something on the street-legal side....
The safety concerns with the retrofit center around the R56 seat back. DOT approval for this harness came following demonstration that the R53 seat back would not collapse due to strain from the belts, as the shoulder straps mount at a height much lower than what is ordinarily considered safe.
Racing Harnesses without roll bars are controversial (BMWCCA does not allow this at their HPDE days for example), as is the use of roll bar/cage in a street driven car (no helmet).
My autocross routine is to slide the seat back a couple of inches, lock the inertia reel, then move the seat back up. This is more locked in than what the CG lock would allow as the chest strap is locked as well. This would be completely impractical on the street as it would greatly impair your ability to check your blind spot or to turn to back up. A full harness would be worse.
I'm tempted to try the CG lock in combination with this:

Just on course though. I too am wary of drivers who feel the need for anything beyond this while driving on public roads.

if you have done track weekends (which I doubt) it's a whole diferent ball game... It's not drifting in the dirt...
