Just finish dropping off my MINI at the dealer for a schedule oil service. The service agent told me that they would need my car a little longer because MINI has a recall on the hood shield; I think that's what they call it. Is the black material under the hood that keeps the head down. They stated that it needs to be replace.
Anyone out there know about the recall?????????

I think I know what you are taking about. This is related to the paint rubbing detected under the front of the hood when closing. I believe MINI has come out with added shields to stop and prevent the rubbing from happening when the hood is closed.

There is complete info at: http://www.bridger.us/mini

I believe Gabe Bridger was the first MINI owner to publicy raise up this particular issue.

I can't find the info on Gabe's site. Am I just overlooking it? I'm interested, but I don't actually have any idea exactly what part you guys are talking about. Is this something that's on all MINIs, and will dealerships do the swap free of charge?

If its an official recall from MINIUSA/BMW they must inform you by mail in written form of the problem. If you don't get anything in the mail from them then your car is not effectied by the recall if in fact there is one. Curious to know if there is one.

Folks,

We should all be very pleased that MINI is issuing recalls. It means they are working through problems and addressing them at great cost to them. I am happy to see this.

If I receive a recall letter, tomorrow, for my MINI's stumble issue, I'll break out the champagne.

See ya,
JS

They are most likely refering to the paint rub issue. MINIs had a spot under the hood, that would rub with the rubber lining above the radiator and cause the paint to come off. New cars now come with plastic shields over those spots, to solve this problem. I used some touch up paint on the rubbed out areas and then had the dealer put the plastic shields on for me.

I was told that the heat shield material on some of the early cars wasn't stiff enough and would sag down. They replaced mine while it was in for a radiator flush. No big deal.

Thanks ernesto. It was posted sometime back in the spring so you have to use the search function or the archive area to find it now.

Just try to think of yourself as a test pilot, and not some kind of Beta Giunea Pig.

It makes the recalls easier to deal with.

Hello chrisnl
I just got a call from the dealer stated that my car is ready for a pic up. It seems that they don't have the part so they schedule me to come back on Oct 7,2003. Once I get to the dealer I will ask for the part name and yes is free because MINI have a recall on them.

So, it's just a cosmetic issue, right? Nothing to do with the heat shielding, just paint on the underside of the hood? If it wasn't downpouring outside right now, I'd go out and have a look.
