How is your's working? Mine doesn't see to dim when they should. I know they work but they don't seem to work when they should. How is everyone elses?

 

Mine seems to work very well. I only wish the side mirrors would auto-dim.

 

Not sure how effective mine is as I have my rear window tinted also, so I never seem to have any glare issues

 

I have to agree with you that the dimming Isn't spectacular. I wanted to see how big of a difference the auto-dim was compared to my old Ford F-150, even though it might not seem like a huge difference, it does reduce the shine! In the Ford F-150 in order to get dimming you need to flip the mirror like most older vehicles! I find that flipping the mirror at night is too dark for me, and its hard to see anything out of it!

I hope this helps, and I tested the F-150 rear-view mirror in standard position! Have fun with your Mini i know I am!

Auto-dim works great. The car is so low to the ground that the side mirrors catch nasty glare from SUVs + trucks...

I luv the Auto Dim Feature like everybody else if only the side view mirrors did also. i get Blinded real bad as i have mine Lowered

 

It probably works pretty well, but its when it doesn't work quite right you notice it. Sometimes it doesn't dimm as much as I'd like, I'd like a manual override on it.

I'd have been quite happy without it, if they'd sell the garage door opener version (homelink) without the auto dimm as well. They used to.

Mine dims a little too good. I notice that sometimes even the setting sun will dim it. On a side note I think my mirror will have to be replaced. I have a dark dot on mine that I thought was dirt. It turns out it is on the inside of the glass. It seems to be getting bigger as time goes on.

 

Is auto-dim standard on all Minis?

Love mine, I noticed it dimming the other day as the sun was setting behind me, kinda creepy really. I do notice that it's not quite as pronounced since i got the windows tinted.

 

just to add my 2 cents......inside rear mirror dims OK....but sure would like auto dimming side mirrors

One thing that would help a lot with side mirrors would be to set them properly, see this website:

Following the above instructions results in your side mirrors not showing traffic behind you,
but in your normally 'blind' spot as they begin to pass and are no longer in your center mirror.

Safety is increased, as you no longer need to look 'over your shoulder' to clear for a lane change.

A side benefit is that side mirrors will no longer reflect headlight glare from following traffic.

 

Do any of you know if the aut dim rear view can be added after market?

 

I've found this to not even be close to true, especially with more and more people running Xenons and frickin' HID lights. Perhaps this is my own personal crusade and the journey will be a lonely one, but I have light-sensitive eyes, especially after laser surgery, and those particular lights blind me and leave ghost images of the lights in my vision for a good 5-10 seconds if I look at them even indirectly (like a side glance through a mirror).

Even before my surgery, such bright lights left their impressions on my vision for moments after seeing them. The lower stance of the MINI aggravates this because the mirror and the driver are much closer to the direct line of the other cars' lights. Even my motorcycle has higher mirrors, thus reducing the amount of direct reflection from light to mirror to eyes. A lot of it has to do with geometry and angles, so the advantage of 'dimming' side mirrors in vehicles with lower-to-the-ground mirrors would be a welcome addition, not to mention potentially increasing safety and avoiding the momentary blindness that some of us experience.

 

My rear view auto-dim feature works great

 

Its an options, either on its own, or as part of the convenience package.

 

I agree about those bluish tinted super-bright headlights and find them even more annoying from on-coming traffic.

Did not order MINI's xenon option because of my memory of the annoyance.

Traffic from behind was never so much of a problem,
with a center 'dimable' mirror and remote adjustable side mirrors, I would adjust them to reflect glare back to car behind,
this was how I first discovered the 'no-blind-spot' setting. (long before the 'internet')

If you will give a try on recommended side mirrors settings, you will experience less glare from following traffic.

(Of course, if you install 'dimable' side mirrors, it will further cut the glare, but for safety,
they should still be adjusted to cover 'blind-spots' -wish you the best!)
