R56 For fun: Pic of my "parking buddy" at work today -- A UNIMOG!

Ha! Right.
What's not really clear in the picture is that it was pouring rain when I took it. Rainy, windy, just bleh outside. (And thus the random leaf "decal" on my grill.)
I tell ya, I must have some sort of weird dedication to NAM if I'm willing to stand out in the soppy rain just to snap a photo of my MINI.

It seems that when we park our cars in the middle of Nowhere to avoid being hit by car doors we seem to attract large trucks
At least this one was considerate and parked on the far side of the spot.

I've seen Unimogs in action, -they are probably one of the most capable production off-road vehicles available. They come in a variety of flavors also (flat bed truck version, transport version, ambulence, emergency responder, etc) ...I've seen many do many cool things.
I haven't seen or hear of one of those things since I worked summers for a crew that cleared power line right-of-ways back around 1972. The company had mounted a 150 gal water tank high on the back and we were to use it as a spray truck.
My job was to drive an old army 6x6 with a 300 tank down the mountain road (just made by bulldozer) and fill the tank in the nearest creek and haul it back up the mountain where we loaded it into the UniMog spray truck.
We talked all the time about how it looked to us to be a little top heavy and narrow for us to have in the WV mountains but what did we know, we were just kids.
The last time I saw the UniMog it had just run into a hidden dip on the drivers side and the water in the tank sloshed. It hovered on 2 wheels for what seemed like 15 seconds before just falling over like a drunk elephant.
Had it not been for a tree, the UniMog would have rolled many times on it's way down the mountain. The 2 workers just walked out the huge windshield and they hauled it away.
The company never sent us another UniMog spray truck.
Thanks for the memories and picture.

On the bright side, at least it won't leave "door" dings.
On the bad side, the driver may use your mini as a stepping stone to get into that thing and leave "roof" dings.

PS. Why'd I respond to such an old thread?
Unimogs are cool. I see them every now and then at ski resorts.
They are as unique as that other more military-oriented off-roader made in Europe, the Pinzgauer.

I do believe the Pinzgauer is made at the same Austrian plant, Steyr-Puch, that will produce the MINI Countryman.

Tron Chief, your picture broght back memories.....
Back in the day I sold Porsches at the dealer in Fresno, in 1983 the 944 had just come out and they were scarce. A Lt. from Lemore was on his way home to the base when he saw we had a red 944 on the stand right by the street - he crossed 6 lanes of traffic when the light changed and screamed into our lot! I was the lucky slaesman who upped him and sold him the car. Over the next few months I think I sold 12 more 944's into the same squad, and they sent me a pic of them in their flight suits, helmets on top of the cars arranged in a semi circle in front of a fighter plane!
Some interesting facts - the MINIs in that pic cost as much or more as the 944's did then, and they got into quite a bit of trouble with the base commandant when he saw the pic, something about it made them look like they were being paid way too much if they all could afford Porsches or something....
Many of the pilots were married with children, a surprise to me as I thought they'd all be young single guys.

another Pinzie, an 8x8

Ironic, but I just the local Pinz here (a mere 4x4) cruising down the snow-packed street throwing up a blizzard wake.

And U guys HAVE to check out this link: http://classicunimogs.com/unimog_photos_5.html
These moggers as a fanatic as us MINI-heads, even more so because they're so rare here. Classics, newer, just like us. Hey! maybe this is the next move for MINI after Countryman, a H/D MINI utility vehicle, with a variety of configurations and duty-specific mods and flavors, something that could fit in a garage, "MINI-Mog"?
