It never ends...

After replacing my left front wheel bearing this AM I was walking past the right rear tire and noticed a slit in the sidewall. It was holding air. Took it to discount tire and their first reaction was it would be fine. I told them I tend to enjoy this car a lot around turns and don't want to be worried about lateral side forces. They are replacing it under the road hazard warranty I bought. Unfortunately its not in stock so they put a used dunlop tire on for the time being.

They have always fixed situations for me and have done good business.

Sorry to hear about that but it's a good routine to check for any visible damage or for nails and such on a regular basis.

You can usually hear the clicking sound of a nail head once embedded on your tire as it rotates at low speeds.

Which Dunlop tire are you waiting for?

My tires are actually Falken 912's. They said they usually stock them but did not have them. The Dunlop tire was a used tire they had in stock in my size to get me by. All my other tires are about 6/32 to 7/32 tread. I hope its not a big deal to have a brand new tire with used tires. Expecially with the ocasional autocross. I actually have an autocross next weekend. They said the tire will be in this week. If its not you think its a big deal to have an odd tire for an autocross?

The loaner tire is the Dunlop Sport 01 DSST. Its a runflat tire I think. Its also a performance summer tire where the Falkens are not. Also the falkens are not runflats. On the way home on the highway my flat tire indicator flashed. It stopped flashing at city speeds. I hope its not an issue to have a runflat tire with 3 other non-runflat tires. Obviously its temporary but I do want to go to the autocross next weekend even if the replacement tire is not in.

It could be a disaster. You don't want to try a performance event with a different tire on one wheel. The car will push, slide and handle like it has lost it's mind.
I once went on the track with a fresh tire that was exactly the same as the other 3, other than the fact that it was fresh and the other three had 25 laps on them, and the car was awful. 1.5 seconds slower per lap and it acted like the suspension was broken. It had been a mistake in the paddock between qualifying sessions. Haven't made that mistake since. I would pull from the event before trying to make it work. My 2 cents. I hope the tire comes in and it is a non-issue. Good Luck.

Thanks for the response. The tire did come in. It is however obviously a new tire with tires worn to 7/32 compared to the measured 9/32 new tire. Its not a timed event and just for fun so I am just going to get out there and have fun and not push hard. I would think after some milage the tire with a little more tread would behave similar to the others with 2/32 less tread. If this was a ***** to the wall driving event I would think twice...

Here is a question for you. I remember when these tires were new it took some driving time before they were broken in and had better traction (ignore the fact they are not a performance summer tire). I wonder if I should put the new tire on the front to wear faster and with the thought that the old tires that are well broken in have better traction for the rear?

Thanks!
k

Sorry

Hey K,
I've been all over the place lately, sorry for the dealy in response. You need to heat cycle the new tire. It's like bedding in brake pads, get 'em hot and let 'em cool. Once you have done that, you should be ok. The autox event might be the perfect place to get that done. That was the mistake I made, the new tire had not been heat cycled and performed very differently compared to the tires that had been heat cycled. Let me know how the autox worked out for you. Good Luck.
