A 2002 MC holds .91 # + or - .02#. this is according to a green tag on top of radiator. look under your bonnet. I doubt an S is different but not positive.

Bentley references 14.6 oz +/- 0.4 which matches the above. Most cans of 134a are 12 oz. Not much!

I thought car ACs didn't use freon any more? I mean, for like 10 or more years. No?

your correct, No Freon in a MINI. Freon is a brand name of the Dupont Company and generally refers to R12 refrigerant. All new cars use R134a. Whereas R12 could utilize a sight glass for proper filling, R134a cannot and is much more sensitive to proper filling than R12. So, make sure you get the proper specification on how much refrigerant your particular MINI holds, or the system may perform poorly or dump it all out...or both.

Old R12 Dichlorodifluoromethane Have you tried to buy it recently?

New 134a Tetrafluoroethane

If not Freon,in general conversation, what do you call it?

"Refrigerant"

Oh yes, I can buy R12 in little cans as I am a certified Auto A/C technician and thus have a license to purchase R12. It is very expensive however. I also have about 45 lbs of the stuff sitting in my garage.

About $30.00 to $35.00/can depending on whether it is by the can or case.

Sounds like they should change the name of R12 to Expensiveon.

refrigerant; When Dupont was the big supplier everyone referred to it as Freon, as in Freon12 or Freon22, who cares what the first post called it.
