R56 Is this only available on the clubman?
Is this only available on the clubman?
Can we not disable the passenger airbag on our R56's? I haven't been able to take the time to look at the schematics to see if there is a way to disable the gonging so I thought, what about disabling the passenger airbag?
If it's like other cars, it would only be a matter of turning a "key" to turn it back on.
I read this on motoringfile is why I ask...
In the event of a collision, the car’s central safety electronics deactivate the central locking, switch on the hazard warning lights and interior lighting, and deactivate the electric fuel pump.
ISOFIX fasteners on the two outer seats in the rear ensure simple and effective installation of child seats. The front passenger airbag can be deactivated by the owner if a child seat is placed at the front.
They were referring to the new Clubman, can we do it also?

I haven't seen anyone on NAM mention doing this, but according to one of the manuals I read, you can have the dealer install a key to turn on/off the passenger airbag. It goes in that round plastic "cover" on the end of the dash near the passenger vent (to the right of the secret compartment). Seems like I saw a parts diagram of it some where as well. Might have been on the real OEM site. This was before the Clubman was out.
On mine, fastening the passenger seatbelt, on an empty or lightly loaded seat, turns on the "Passenger Airbag Off" light at left of upper toggle bank.
Don't know what minimum weight in seat turns Airbag back on, but 105# does it.
Have no children, but thought that child seat always went in back and there are special fastners back there.
Have no round plastic cover to right of secret compartment either.

The cover is only visible when the passenger door is open. It's on the end of the dash that is not visible when the door is closed. There is one on both sides of the car. Probably due to the car being left and right hand drive.
Edit: I found it. In EU vehicles, a switch is an option according to the WDS wiring diagrams. I knew I read it some where.
The switch goes in that round hole labeled S559.
This is not available on US cars though.

It wouldn't be as annoying if it gonged and went off (which it does) but the moment one of them moves around, it starts all over.
I figure if there was a switch, I could turn it back on when a pass. (rarely) rides with me.

Hey Crush, you can latch the seat belt and leave the wiener dogs loose.
I know a guy with a big Ford truck that prefers to drive without a seat belt. He junkyarded the part that secures the belt and is the male side of the "click it" part. (I know, such technical terms). Anyway, he can ride around belt and chimeless.
If you had a spare thing-a-ma-bob, as described above, you could drop the wieners in the right seat and motor without the ding-dong.
Or something like that.

I hate to be negative but reading another thread crush participated in he is not open to suggestions. Did not want to get a spare male end for when the dogs are in the car, did not want to buckle the existing belt across the front or even around the back of the seat. All too much trouble for him. Only wanted to be able to permanently disable/bypass the gong. He was even getting quite angry in the other thread. So to prevent this thread from heading the same way lets leave it alone here.
The chime you are hearing has nothing to do with the airbag. It is for the seat belt. I believe the weight sensor is set at 80lbs. Any child or very small adult under 80lbs will automatically set the airbag to the off position. I know if I put groceries in the passengers seat it will sometimes do the same to me, seat belt warning going off. Like another poster said the easiest way to "fix" the problem is to buckle the belt and then let the dogs go wild in the front seat.
Preferably the dogs or any animals for that matter should be caged for their safety and yours. If you get into an accident you more than likely would loose both dogs or they could be the cause of the accident running loose inside a vehicle. I am not being **** about it because it is your dogs, but I value my pets life to much to have anything happen to them in an accident and thrown around or out of a car.
My little guy wears a harness that has an attachment on the back for the seatbelt to go through so that he is secure. So all problems are resolved: no dinging and no airbuds.
With two dog you can use carabiners to attach their harness to the seatbelt. Can even use a daisychain if you want them to have a bit more mobility but not be projectile.

I thought about that because someone else suggested it but honestly, I was trying to bypass the gonging sound. I would have rather remove the sound for once and all.
Thanks for the suggestion and if I can't bypass the wiring, that may be the next best thing.

You bring up a good point. I live 8 miles from work and never really had an issue.
HOWEVER, last week, some idiot pulled right out in front of me and locked down the brakes.
For the first time since I've had Bondo (he's 12 now) I had to lock up the brakes and he flew forward and hit the dash. I felt terrible. I honestly never thought about the dogs flying around.
I'm thinking of getting some sort of tether or harness for them.

I agree.... the weight sensor shuts off the airbag if under a certain weight so I guess my idea of disabling the pass. airbag isn't going to cure my problem anyways. Good point.
Apparently, there is no weight sensor for the seatbelt. As long as you have weight in it, it wants the seatbelt connected.
I'll check the wiring schematic and see if I can "fix" the wiring.
