1st Person Crank Pulley Account!

ive heard all of these horror stories that if you change your crank pulley to one without a harmonic balancer...

"YOURE GOING TO BLOW UP YOUR ENGINE!"
"ITS SO DANGEROUS!"
"CERTAIN DEATH!"
"DONT DO IT,
RECONSIDER,
READ SOME LITER-
ATURE ON THE SUBJECT(Int'l Playas Anthem)"
etc. etc,...

but has ANYONE actually had this happen to THEM OR SOMEONE THEY PERSONALLY KNOW?

im not saying its not possible, because

I KNOW IT IS POSSIBLE,

i just want to know if its likely,
or even probable for that matter

just curious

I know that there are plenty of the BMW guys who have experimented with crank pulleys and have blown their engines. It all depends if the harmonic balancer is internal or external. If it is external....then YES...you can do it (like Mustangs). But in our case..No...you shouldnt do it...

What UKSUV means to say is there hasn't been a single MINI brought to light yet that has had an engine failure directly attributable to the solid crank pulley. I'm not talking about failed oil pumps with peoples opinions attached, but solid fact behind it.

if it was an internal harmonic balancer, then replacing the crank pulley wouldnt have any affect on the balancer; correct?

and an external balancer is the one thats connected directly to the crank pulley?

or am i backwards on that?

tomorrow I'll mount my new Alta oversized cranck pulley..I have talked with a large number of tuners in the u.s.a and in italy and they told me that if the install is correct..there aren't problems,They have installed a large number of light crank pulley with no issue.

The oil-pump problems are related to car with a 8000 rpm rev limitier..

On my earlier post I didnt suggest to say there was an internal balancer.....only that it is balanced to take up the wobble from the rotating mass.....

Not all, in fact it was just a single one if I remember correctly. And the rest all had aftermarket crank pullies.

You probably meant vibration, not wobble

I've checked the balance of the crank pulley(alta) and it is very very very good..perfect!

Monday after the installation I'll check if there are some vibrations at the crank.

I have not heard of first hand account, I had no probs with my ex MCS 112k miles with 16% pulley and 2% crank pulley. But I heard from a friend that his cousins M Coupe blew his due to crank pulley.

Apples and oranges. Short inline-4 engines with forged crankshafts and 5 main bearings have vastly different harmonics than a really long inline-6 with a relatively-flexible crankshaft. In an inline-6 the shock waves create resonances within the crank, whereas an inline-4 engines crank is usually too short to experience those resonances. A cross-plane V-8 crank has its own issues; being so 3-dimensional creates a plethora of awkward harmonics that require damping. It's also worth mentioning the S54 engine has had its own share of reliability problems over the years, even in bone-stock form. The crank pulley may have been a correlation, but not causation.
