Engine ticking with a 15% pulley

I got my pulley swapped and everything is well, except ticking engine.

it doesn't happen all the time or regularly, but at certain rpm at certain period of time, i hear the engine very briefly.

everything else is well. does this happen to anybody else?

my temp is totally fine also, but i'm thinking of getting a bottle of water wetter thinking that maybe my engine runs a bit hot.

any thoughts?

hmmm, Ticking, or is it more like a tapping sound a sticking valve makes ? Does this ever happen when engine is cold or just after warmed up ?

Thanks for posting the video

The knocking sound is far from being That bad for sure, and it starts to happen after I redline the car once or twice, or just regularly drive for awhile. I also hear fluttering just driving calmly afterwards.

I don't think it's the sticking valves, my bimmer has a bit of valve problems and it doesn't sound like that.

I opened the bonnet and found out that the engine is running much more hotter; the fan started operating much more regularly at idle to cool the engine too.

hmm...

check any hoses that may be pinched

This isn't gonna be easy to diagnose It wasn't that warm there today either.

How did you determine the engine was running warmer than usual by lifing the hood. Did you actually shoot the engine with Laser temp guage or just a guess.

When the sc pully was installed, they had to lift the engine a skootch to get it in there....maybe a hose got pinched when they dropped it back down onto the mounts ?

Did MINI put the pully in ?

The fan was going off a lot more often. I had the hood up for like 5 mins and it went off 3-4 times. that never happened before. so the engine has got to be running hotter, no?

the pulley was installed by Dani at Mini Corsa, and he's done this many times, so i'm sure he did a great job. I just don't understand why it's knocking.

specifically, it knocks right before my JCW's flap opens at 4500 rpm. it knocks in between 3K-4K...

as you mentioned, it is really cold here today.. i just drove home and it was 59 degrees farenheit...

maybe my car is craving for a bit more air?

Have you ever seen the oil light on?

Have you ever run it out of oil?

Maybe the rod bearings went dry and caused a little extra clearance and are either knocking or the pistons are now just barely hitting the head?

I had to replace the stock crank pully on my 02 MCS. The rubber had craked and the outer part of the pully was knocking against the inner part of the pully. It sounded just like a rod knoking in the bottom end. Remove your right front wheel and visually inspect the crank pully.

I have a similar or maybe the same sound. Usually, I hear it when I rev over 4500 rpm. Maybe it could be that the engine is still cold or a cold day. The thing is that I hear it only when my windows are down. Maybe is wind noise! I was thinking that it was valves!

My Mini just got back from the shop - The supercharger was bad. If you can get to the pulley see if you have any play from side to side. I took a screw driver and got play when i pushed or pulled on the pulley rod. If you do it may be the supercharger. If your mini is under warranty, make sure you have the stock pulley put on, other wise the dealership may not warranty the supercharger repair.

I don't think the heat or more appropriately the lack thereof has anything to do with your problem. Apparently the car was running just fine before the pulley swap. The best advice I can give you is to go to a qualified mechanic that has the equipment and tools to properly diagnose your problem. Listening to all the shade tree mechanics on the web can get you a heapin helpen of mis-diagnosis. 59 degrees is not cold, maybe to you but not the car.

JMHO.

I just listened to that video and I head two distinct sounds, one sounds like sort of rapid fire pssht sound, kinda high pitched. The second one was lower pitched and happening at a slower rate. Which of the two of these are we talking about?

My MINI make the first sound I mentioned, and I have been told that it was just the fuel injectors...
