Hi all, I'm a newbie here but I have heard a lot about the cooper from friends and what i've seen online. After noticing that it seems to have cleaned up in H-stock autox this weekend I was wondering if anyone could give me more information on them. More specifically, how much does the non-S cooper weigh and what does the power curve look like (peak numbers at the wheels or a dyno if possible).

Spotch,
Aloha and welcome to MCO,
You can find most of the technical stuff at MINI2.com
http://www.mini2.com/technical/cooper.php
Weight (kg - lb):
Manual: 1150 - 2535
CVT: 1165 - 2568
Max. load (DIN) (kg): 430
Max. permissible weight (DIN) (kg): 1480. CVT: 1505
Max. permissible axle load, front - rear (kg): 870 - 700
Max. trailer load braked (12%) - unbraked (kg): 650/500
Luggage comp. capacity VDA (l): 150
Drag coefficient/front area (cx * A): 0.35

>Engine

Layout - No. of cylinders - valves: In-line - 4 -4
Engine management: Siemens EMS 2000
Displacement, effective (cm3): 1598
Stroke - Bore (mm): 85.8 - 77
Compression ratio: 10.6:1
Fuel grade (ROZ): 91 to 98 ROZ
Max. output (kW/PS): 85/115
At engine speed: 6,000rpm
Max. torque (Nm): 149
At engine speed: 4,500rpm

Power is not the whole answer for why the MC excels at AutoX. Ask the drivers. How many were CVT?

>Performance

Power to weight ratio (DIN) (kg/kW): 12.4. CVT 12.7
Output per liter (kW/l): 53.2
Acceleration (manual only):
0-62mph (s): 9.2
0–1000 m (s): 30.8
In 4th/5th gear 50–75 mph (s): 10.5/14.4
Top speed (manual only): 125mph

Acceleration (CVT only):
0-62mph (s): 10.4
Top speed (CVT only): 115mph

Do a search for a dyno for the MC stock.
Here is a place to start. Superchip vs stock

Thanks- that is a good dyno chart and thread on MC mods.

Wow thanks! 109whp and 103tq at the wheels with just a filter/exhaust is great! Kudos to the wheel/tire/brake upgrade, those would probably be some of my first mods too

Actually, that dyno chart was done BEFORE my intake. Exhaust only. I tested a Green Twister intake , this is the second time I dyno'd it:

minihune - thanks. gotta try and bump up that thread once in a while

spotch - i am currently running the Monster Mini Force Intake. I suspect it makes a little bit of power. Supposedly, my exhaust makes no power according to Grassroots Motorsports. In any event, Eric @ Helix was impressed by the numbers my car put out on a hot and humid July day. It is by no means a slow car...

I was talking to Jim Bogard over at Mini Mania and he said some really interesting things about the Cooper. For "The Italian Job" they had to use electric cars underground because they weren't allowed to burn fuel. The regular Cooper's drivetrain loses much less HP so they used those rather than the S to turn into electric cars. Knowing that, they wanted to create a ton of mods for the regular Cooper, but the customers all wanted the S and to mod that so they have to follow the trend to recoup their R&D costs.

Anyway, I quoted an AutoCross addict in the "mc vs Mcs" thread who really explained why the Cooper does so well, if you care to search for the thread.

I will say that when I've shown up at some performance open houses, I'm the only Cooper. Doesn't really matter - these cars are still in their infancy, and we'll see a flood of aftermarket stuff for the Cooper at some point by bigger BMW guys. It's trickling out at this point.

The gearing of the Cooper is more helpful in auto-x situations, and so much depends on the driver.

I would also suggest people look at the latest issue of Eurotuner, and read about how big a deal suspension truly is. Once you get past the fact that the MINI (Cooper or MCS) is not the fastest gun on the block - suspension makes the most sense to mod.

I don't think I agree with this. I may be way off base but I find that the cooper handles so well stock that it doesn't need any suspension mods. I am attending a driving school very soon to learn how to properly drive the car to its full potential, so I may reverse my opinion.

The Cooper handles great stock. But it can get better. Putting good tires on it and lowering it changed the dynamics of the car. I started out with the standard supension, not SS+. Some may not like the ride of it lowered though. Depends on what you're after.
