GIAC Tune vs Shark Injector for upgraded Cooper S

I currently have a Shark Injector and it is installed on my 03 mini cooper s. I have all the bolt ons such as intake, catback exhaust, 15% pulley, etc. I am looking into installing a set of OBX headers and an Ultrik cam that is similar to the Schrick. Will all of this work with my current shark software? Will conforti update the software for me? And, I was also considering a GIAC tune...what will be my best route?

I am in Florida. I live in Naples, just a few minutes away from a GIAC tuner but that shop works on Aston Martins and such for super rich people and their labor rate is $120 per hour so I think I may not go there. I am going to school in Gainesville and I am within two hours of tuning shops in Tampa, Orlando, and Jacksonville.
Has anyone heard of Axis Motoring in Orlando? I found the shop on giacusa.com but i cannot access their website.

Yeah, I was going to say "Jan Tune" also. That's why I asked bout the location. Hmmmm...
GIAC has to be better than Shark, but Jan trumps them both.
Sorry I can't be of more help..

I'd rather not take out my ECU and mail it off...how much is a Jan Tune and how's it work...I googled it. No luck. Anyways, is it a ton better than GIAC??

Really well-qualified people to ask about the GIAC and a tune from RMW (aka, Jan) are at Helix13, a tuner located quite a ways north of you. The thing is that Helix has worked with BOTH GIAC and Jan, and they can tell you most of what you might want to know, with NO BS. I know from personal experience that they will not steer you wrong. Jan will say that you can call him and talk with him, which is true. However, he is VERY busy, so you might not have as much luck getting a live body to speak with right away. Eric at Helix is a great guy. I also got my OBX header from him, with an OEM cat welded into it. It's been a good mod, and installed easily by my local installer as shipped from Helix. I don't know of anyone who has had anything but a good experience with Helix.

I will say that when it comes to tunes, any off-the-shelf product -- the Shark, GIAC, Unichip or any other -- will be of some help for some people. But a custom tune is the only way to really maximize power. Jan does tour around the nation on occasion, so you might ask around about his schedule, though I don't know if he has done or will do any gigs in FLA.

In any case, I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide to do.

You don't take your ECU out for a Jan tune, your car is tuned on a dyno after reading exactly what your car is doing, then dynoed again and tweaked accordingly. The cost of his tune is no more if not less than many of the canned tunes. Think I saw here that there is a tune coming up in Florida.
PS: Do a search here on NAM and you will find many threads with the results.

At the last Jan Tune Dyno Day here in Seattle, he read the Shark Injector to see what tuning it offered. It gives you approximately 30% more timing EVERYWHERE across the curve without any adjustments to fueling. This is NOT the way to tune a forced-induction engine, especially one such as the MCS which has IAT issues. At said dyno event, Jan would not even dyno the car without resetting timing to stock as he felt it was highly unsafe and he's not in the business of blowing motors on the dyno.

To prevent damage, remove the Shark injector ASAP and go with a tune that actually offers some semblance of tuning! I do believe Jan has a dyno event coming up in October that you should get in on. In addition to custom mapping for your specific car, you also get a desensitized traction control system and a revised throttle curve that overall makes the car much better to drive.

If you must have only between the two you mentioned, I'd do GIAC. Also, there been issues with some of the early Ultrik cams, and both Schrick cams generally did not yeild much power, the power they did get was at top with some loss in lower rpm range. BUT RMW cams (with head) and a Jan tune.
I'd get headers and Jan tune and save the cam cash for a JanHead (RMW)

Hey, GatorS, check this out. Jan is going to do tunes in Florida October 4-5. It's on the Drivetrain Forum.

I'll be flying down to Ft. Lauderdale to tune a race car that has a stroker engine in it. I haven't set the date yet but it will be in Oct. If you want to drop by I can tune the car for you.

Alright guys, you've sold me on just doing the headers and getting a Jan Tune for now. What about when I decide to drop in a cam and injectors and a new head though...do I have to hunt Jan down again and find a place to meet up?

Fort Lauderdale is a 5 hour drive from The University of Florida in Gainesville...Any other places/times that I could meet up with you Jan? I heard the Tampa event was cancelled/postponed? In November, December, and January I'll be home in Naples and Fort Lauderdale is only an hour away...no problem then if you'll be over there for anything.

Jan,
Uhh...WTF is up with this race car? Any info on that? I'd love to see that in person...I'm about a 30min drive from there! Any track time scheduled?

When you get a new head, cam etc., your going to want a new tune anyway. You might go ahead and put injectors on it before Jan tunes it.

Right now I've got about 1500 - 2000 dollars that I want to put into my Mini. What would you recomend doing? I was thinking headers, high flow cat, cam, and tune. Now I'm thinking maybe headers, cat, tune, and injectors? Also, I have a stock intercooler and a 15% pulley...should I go to a 17%?

What exhaust are you running now? Injectors, cam and tune would give ya a really nice running car for the low end of your budget. Pulley depends on what you want your car to do, track, drag, street? Without the new head I like the 15% pulley but I like a track type car where I'm in the higher RPMs more. This is just my 2 cents as pulley size has been argued more than who has the biggest.........
PS: Give Jan a PM and get his advice.

I've got a pulley, shark injector tune, cold air intake, NGK sparkplugs, and Invidia Ti cat-back that I like a lot!

Then just get a tune and injectors and maybe the cam, you WILL be very happy with the change. The injectors allow for more fuel and Jan can get more out of it, the stock one's tend to run out before max power can be acheived.

+1 on injectors, header and Jan tune, save rest of money for RMW head/cams.

I just bought the OBX header and a magnaflow cat...I was planning on getting a RMW cam.
My questions are: Will the cam work alright without a new header? Will this all work on the Shark injector tune until I can get the RMW tune in a couple of months??

I thought the shark injector was just a means of uploading a tune. Can't it be loaded with different or custom maps? Kind of like a unichip with less capability?
