don't listen to him, he's just trying to keep you calm, you need to take a serious swing at that PANIC button and hope to hell you connect. A guy I know lost his registration: he was walking down the street one day three years later... BAM! hit by a car.
Got to: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm
Scroll down to "How do I apply for a duplicate registration card"

Sheesh... it's no big deal. No need to panic.
Since you are in California go online to the DMV and make an appointment to request a duplicate reg. Simple. May even be able to do it by mail.
Law is on loss of a reg, you must "immediately" ask for a new one. That's vague, maybe it is ten days elsewhere in the Code. If you get stopped before getting the new reg you might get a fix it ticket, but may not as soon as the officer verifies the car is not stolen.
Tip: Make a DMV appointment, print a screen shot of the appt. confirmation page, carry that in the car. If you get stopped show the officer you have an appointment to get a duplicate. He may let you off the hook on seeing you are telling the truth. He would only ticket you [fix it ticket] if he thinks you are BSing him on getting it taken care of. Besides, they do a check to see if your reg is current, etc. So the only issue is if you are serious about getting the reg. The more you can convince him you are not lying and are not a deadbeat, the more likely you won't have to hassle with a fix it ticket.
