I mentioned in the Banana Gloss thread that I had applied BG on black trim.

DON'T do this!!!!!!! It took a week, and a couple of washes, but the trim turned white. So now I need to Black Wow all of it to get it black again.

Ruh-Roh !!!

I didn't protect my black trim when I applied it.

I thought it was pre-tested on the trim and didn't stain.

 

I've got it on mine now for about 3 weeks without any white at all. Of course Epic never stained my trim either.

 

When I visited DP, Heather told me that according to their chemist, minute chemical variations in each batch of manufactured auto plastic could account for the varied experiences we've all had (some of our trim turns white, some doesn't).

She also said Richard was working on a dedicated trim cleaner to compliment Black WOW.

Epic turned my trim white where I was sloppy.

BW helped, along with elbow grease, peanut butter, alcohol, and a toothbrush, but I see at least one spot I either missed or the white just reappeared.

I was more careful the second time around, and was similarly careful when I topped the Epic with Banana Gloss.

 

I applied a little last fall from the test bottle, and it did not do it. When I did the full application about 2 weeks ago it was fine, but after a couple of washes, not sure what that had to do with it, all the trim is streaked white. Going to Black Wow after an alcohol wipe.

I used the Banana Gloss on Friday and went to town with it. All over everything, and YEP the black trim turned white! Not only over the wheel wells but on the black trim at the roof too. I took some Nero to it and it seemed to go right back to black, its still black since Friday.

On a side note, Banana Gloss makes the car look amazing. And the ease of removal is incredible.

 

I got BG on all the black trim, arches, roof trim, washer nozzles. The only thing that turned white was the arches, side skirts. And those are not the same everywhere. I guess the different plastics are effected differently.

Yeah, but anytime I've used BW on white trim, as soon as the BW begins to wear off, the white is back. It covers it up, doesn't remove it.

Rubbing alcohol works so-so. Peanut butter works so-so. Can't find anything that works great.

Can't wait for OG to come out with his wax-on-trim remover.

 

I really have to wonder if such a wonder product will ever be developed. If alcohol takes wax off paint, why not plastic? I'm resined to keeping the wax off the plastic with BW and keeping it that way by re applying every few months.

I think that's the best we can do, Mark.

I have one particularly stubborn spot on the trim and I hit it with the trifecta... PB, Alcohol, and BW. We'll see how long it takes to start coming back out this time.

It's pissing me off enough, I'm seriously considering replacing that piece of trim.

Geez, ken, no matter how much time I spend in Griot's website and looking through their catalog, there's always something I haven't seen before.

I'd be concerned that if I used that dye, it might not be a perfect match for the shade of black for the rest of the trim and I'd end up dying ALL of it.

Lotsie, thanks for doing the experiment! Could your drive up north have anything to do with it? (Some odd chemicals on the road that might have splashed on?)

I BG'ed my trim too (I didn't mask it, that is, so some got on the trim) and no whitening.

 

Epic - no problems, no white on the trim.
BG - no problem, no white on the trim.
Swirl - big problem. Takes me several applications of BW to remove the white from my trim. I scrub like crazy to get Swirl out of the pores and stop it from turning white. Almost makes a guy want to tape (but not quite).
Must be a lot of plastic variations out there.

 

Yeah, man I HATE taping.

Taped last time I broke out the PC and the Swirl though. I think it's the lesser of the two evils.

 

I think there is a lot of difference in the plastics. I had almost all the arches, front, rear skirts, and one side skirt replaced after a ditch adventure, long story it's all here on NAM somewhere. The plastics all seem to be affected by wax to different extents. Some look real bad, some don't show bad at all. It all leads me to re-think using Zaino, as I've had no ill affects with it.

Wow! Thanks for point this out. We worked really hard on BG to avoid staining trim. Looks like we have some more work to do. Personally, I haven't been able to stain, but I do have a limited sample size. It's crazy how many people don't line up for, "Hey buddy. Let me put this on your trim to see if it stains."

Did anybody have staining issues with the early samples of Banana GAS?

 

I didn't have actual staining, but when I used what was left of my sample a few weeks ago I noticed that it took a lot of work to get it off one of my arches (the driver side rear arch). I followed the directions and got some on the arches (since earlier reviews had said that it was fine to get it on there), but it took at least 10 mins of hardcore rubbing in order to get it off the plastic.

Note: I did not use Black Wow prior to applying the Banana Gas. I had planned on applying some but I left the Black Wow at home.

 

If the white returns it's likely because:

1.) you never removed it in the first place
2.) the plastic is so far gone that nothing will bring it back.

BW has a small amount of cleaners in it, and along with an applicator with some bite (sewn edge of MF Skinny for example)--you can work the white stuff out--unless it's white due to physical damage and not a coating of polish/wax.

 

Yeah, I'm not expecting BW to remove the white stuff, Richard. Just getting tired of covering it up over and over again.

I tested a spot last time by hitting it with rubbing alcohol five times and it seems not to be coming back to white this time.

Now, to do that to about seven other spots next time the BW wears off.
