Well, it is the Hill Brake the brake is on for a few seconds to avoid roll back...designed that way!

It is part of the DSC system. If you have DSC, you have hill assist.

That's a feature that comes with DSC, from what I recall. Can't wait to try it out.

From the 1940's through the 1960's all manual transmission Studebakers came with "Hill Hold" as standard equipment.

When you depressed the clutch, a valve held the brake fluid pressure for you until you released the clutch.

Upon discharge, my license had expired, so I took a California driving test in San Francisco (city of hills) and used a Studebaker

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I ordered DSC. Cool feature.

That's really sad that your MA didn't go over this when your car was delivered.

I have driven MT cars for almost 20 years and have never had problems starting on hills. That said, I found the hill assist to be a very neat feature and I do look forward to it on my MCS. I just wonder if it will make my skills "lazy" and create problems driving other MT cars

Yes, you have the option to turn it off via the button at the shifter. I paid the extra $500 for DSC and now I believe it comes standard on the '09's

It is an awesome feature.

Hill Hold is very cool. Surprised me the first day too.

Worst problem: when I depart the Mini and drive the C4S Cab, I forget sometimes.

One day I'm going to be driving my ladyfriend's car and forget that hers doesn't have it.

Probably right after I forget there's no sixth gear and try to put it into reverse on the highway.

My hill assist is a standard feature. I use the big lever between the driver and passenger seat. Works like a charm every time.

Hill assist is only activated when both the clutch and brake are depressed at the same time. If you don't want it in play at level stops, put the shift in neutral, let out the clutch. When the light is green release the brake, then depress the clutch, put it in gear and start out.

I like it with normal driving, but on very steep hills -- such as my driveway or some San Francisco streets -- I prefer the eBrake method.

^why is that?

Personally I love it, and it was worth the entire price of DSC. I'm not a great stick driver, as my dad put it, I'm coordinated enough to do it without stalling, but I have very little experience. The city of Seattle has some serious hills. Without hill assist, I'd surely have rolled into someone by now. I'm much better at it now, but when I first picked it up, man, I was bad.

My MA didn't know how it worked. I asked him and he referred me to the manual.

My auto seems to have it as well. When I am on an incline (My driveway), the break holds for 2 sec before letting the car slide back. On level ground it does not act that way. Fun FUn FUN

I was...ahem...bragging about this feature to an aquaintance last week, he laughed and said his old Subaru had the same feature back in the 80's. DOH!
