why not? it just folds under. my car is probably way too low to get a full plate to fold up and under like that though

Now make it automatically do that so you can activate it near cops. Then you'd have something.

This would be really cool if you could have it motorized so that you can just flip a switch from inside the car -- you get pulled over: just flip it up.

Edit: ahh, typing at the same time Nabeshin was posting

That is really a slick idea...now to only adapt an accuator to it for in car triggering...just like posted above I think that would make it perfect...

I think that it could be done semi-easily:
(1) small accuator
(1) pivoting mounting bracket attached to the plate-system back
(1) pivoting mounting bracket attached in chosen location under the car
Create a simple 2 way wiring harness and a switch trigger...

Sounds like a sweet little project + it keeps us legal without messing up our beautiful front ends

I think it's actually illegal to have a device to hide or change your license plate on demand from inside the car. Mythbusters did something to change the rear plate on a car to try to beat the speed cameras. But Jamie said it was technically illegal.

I have heard it is illegal too. How would you even run that setup? The only place would be under the lip and at my height I'd be dragging it on the ground all day long...

Hmm, I like it, when you guys figure out the actuator and stuff let me know. Unfortunately I have some other projects which take precedence over this, but if you guys haven't figured it out by early 09' I might start working on it.

I'm wondering if you could cut a slot in the lower grill and have it pop out there. Fasten the slider to the steel frame behind the bumper. I just looked at $60 8" actuator that would probably work... hmmm man I wish I had more time!!!

To bring back a thread.. They now sell a electric version. But, you have to deploy or stow it with a key fob remote. If it were set up to pop out whenever the car was running, I'd order it today.

I have the aero kit and the center section is actually a bit higher than the sides and this would probably work...

Still looking.

I am impressed, it would be nice in my neighborhood, where the only time I get no front plate tickets is when I am parked. It is like they don't have anything better to do.

this would be easy to do - just tap in and connect to the ebrake. when the ebrake is released and ignition on, the unit goes up or down (whichever way you want it)

Hmmmm Slightly more to it. The fob has two buttons one to stow one to display. So the radio rec'vr is sending opposite polarity to the motor... And you have to hold the button till it's done. So there's no limit switch or anything. On the bright side I could add a interior toggle to do that too bypassing the remote radio fob.

So need a timed latch circuit, two really, one that goes on when car starts and one that activates when it shuts down.

In any case I just ordered one. Hahahahahahaha Will start with the fob and see. I called and it's only 3/4" thick. So with the aero kit front and the slighty higher area in the middle with that I am hoping it'll work. I'll let everyone know if I get it installed in a way I'm satisfied with.

Very interesting. I was thinking about rigging something up like this that would be hidden behind the bumper and drops on demand.

This looks slick.

this would be a fun and easy project, if my state required front plates.

Well, my favorite 'view' of my MINI is the front 3/4, and I really like the aero kit and black grills so the plate has always been a eyesore to me. Maybe I have my cure.

On the subject of license plates. I was wondering if you would be able to get away with having a sticker made that looked exactly like your plate. I was just looking at the back the other day and I really hate how much the plate sticks out. It's probably illegal, but do you think a cop would really be able to tell?

And I absolutely love this thing. I have quad lights along the bottom and can't have the plate on, so I'm just waiting to run into a cop that's having a bad day or something.

A few years ago, when I first go my E46 BMW I couldn't bear the idea of putting on the front plate. I didn't want to just stick the metal license on the front dash (too dangerous and noisy), so I just scanned on my color copier, covered it with a plastic sheet and put that up in the corner on the dash. Never had a problem (other than after a year the colors faded (in missouri, we had a multicolored plate) and I had to recopy it).
