R56 I think my hoodscoop melted
I think my hoodscoop melted
yesterday afternoon when i went to get into my car (which is always garaged) i noticed a wierd bend on my scoop
pulled it out into the light and sure enough it was deformed
there is NO dent or chip of paint or anything
its kinda like deformed and the top of the scoop has gone down and the sides have risen....
i am going to take a picture tonight but i just have to say that based on the other stories of hood scoops melting and the fact that its been sitting in the garage for a couple of days and i know that it didnt happen anytime before cuz i would have noticed it ANDDD that the point of deformation lol is on the top of the scoop, no place that any object could hit while being driven, am i assuming that the scoop has melted.....
btw, i didnt go on any long drives before i garaged it and it is not hot in my garage either....if that matters....
i guess the question is....does this sound like its been melted....or is it something else.....

do you have the scoop grill with openings or is it fully closed off? also what is the manufactured date? I have a 02/05/08 build with the partially open scoop and so far no issues. everything is completely stock thus far.
This is what is known in the trades as
a "undocumented design feature"! Let you're dealer know that you need a new one under warranty. And maybe an ECU software upgrade....

crap now i'm a little worried. i guess i'll be using a dremel to open up the rest of the grill.
Take it in to the dealer and they will replace the scoop. I would have them replace it with the carbon one like mine did, 25k and no problems. Also dont open the holes in the scoop. a fellow NAM member did this and had an issue with there ignition coils. The dealer would not fix the issue saying water rusted them.

the dealer gave you the carbon one? did you pay a difference? or simply made a complaint that the stock one doesnt work and you want the carbon one....has the carbon one melted?

i wont be opening up holes, i havent and wont touch the scoop, dont see a point since the intake box is closed

I asked nicely about the carbon scoop. I said I didnt want to worry about paint match and it melting again. I didnt pay 1$ for the carbon scoop and so far it has not melted.
Here is a big thread on the problem if you havent seen it. https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...d.php?t=128350
The melting is caused by trapped heat off the turbo..
Matt
lollll, for some reason im not really "hurt" about it, in retrospect, i expected myself to get extremely upset and call and bite someones head off, but surprisingly enough, its just "whatever" for me right now....probably because i know that its under warranty
Thanks for the pics - that is definitely a design flaw. Great to hear though that at least they are warrantying it and giving you hopefully a non-flawed fix (e.g. carbon fibre scoop)
I've got a March 08 build MCS and haven't noticed anything yet...however I have noticed the hood does get really hot compared to other cars.

I plan to get a clearbra installed this week so I've been watching these melted scoop threads. For the record, my 2008 MCS arrived last Thursday; put ~90mi on the odometer. The hood scoop is partially vented.
It seems everyone's trying to come up with some way to cover, wrap, or insulate the turbo. I don't recall it being mentioned, has anyone tried applying a heatshield material directly to the underside of the hood? After a quick Google, I'm considering this product

I was thinking about placing it between the underside of the hood and the black insulation pad so it would be discrete.

yea i can't either, but you never know....if anyone has experience with mini universal city than any heads up info would be good...
Ooooh, good plan Ian, I'ma look into this!
Ouch, that's pretty bad, definitely a warranty issue. I'd even bring up engine temps after shutdown and see what they have to say.
i just called the service dept and spoke with mike and he said he has to look at it and also wants to check what's causing the engine temps to rise....but that in any case it would be covered under warranty...
so ian, you say just ask them for the carbon one stating those reasons....
also side question...does the carbon one "not melt" for any specific reason?
