The BATTLE begins....
The BATTLE begins....
I've had some personalized plates that could have been considered "offensive". My last plate "LKEITWET" was rejected 3 times by the DMV. (I used to race jetskis)
I called the DMV in Raleigh and argued with the lady that makes the decisions as to what is or isn't considered offensive.
I explained to her that I raced jetskis and she said that as long as I could provide a letter from my sponsor, she would allow it.
I did and she kept her word.
A few weeks later, I ordered the plate "LUVITWET" for my jetski trailer. It was returned along with the plate and with a big red marker "I remember you from last time"...lol, well, she gave it to me.
Anyway, I ordered a plate for my mini. The DMV rejected it. I called the lady up and much to my surprise, she remembered me from my other plates.
She told me that initially it would be rejected and if I could give a decent arguement, she would consider the plate.
Sooooooo, here's the letter I sent to the DMV.
Dear Kay XXXXXXX,
As per our discussion last week, we had discussed the reason why my plate “KSSMY-S” was rejected.
Though the DMV has to initially reject anything that may be uncertain, the reason stated for my plate’s denial was because it may be considered in “poor taste”.
I am asking that this plate be reconsidered for several reasons.
1) My car is a Mini Cooper “S”. I love the car and the term “Kiss my S” was in referall to my Mini Cooper “S”. The fact that the you, the DMV or anyone may be offended would only be in the fact that they are purposely reading more into it than necc. (get your mind out of the gutter…lol)
2) I have had several plates (as shown below) that could be construed as offensive and yet they were passed.
Some examples are:
Fordgasm

LKEITWET (from racing jetskis and the trailer plate LUVITWET)
If neither of these plates are not considered in poor taste, then surely the plate I am requesting doesn’t even come close.
3) The reason that the plate was rejected was because it “may” be considered in “poor taste”. What exactly is poor taste and who determines it?
Wearing white after labor day is in poor taste, is it illegal? I think not. Is it offensive? Only to those with a fashion sense.
Telling a racial joke in public may not be illegal but most likely could be labelled as poor taste. Is there a government agency to determine if these are considered “poor taste”? None that I know of.
4) Last but not least, the constitution of the United States defines the first amendment, “Freedom of Speech” as:
The right to speak without censorship or restraint by the government. Freedom of speech is protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Where does the “United States of the Offended” draw the line at what is offensive or in poor taste? If I had a Harley Davidson Fatboy motorcycle and ordered the plate “FATBOY”, would I have to worry about offending every overweight man because it may be offensive?
The plate I’m requesting wasn’t even deemed offensive, it was rejected because it “may” be in poor taste. Well, unless the government is now dictating what may or may not be considered poor taste, I guess no one will be allowed to wear white after labor day.
Please give me my plate. My mini Cooper is the best car I have ever owned and I find it offensive that I can’t express my joy over my car.
I'll let ya'll know what happens....
