The Fast & The Frugal: Mini Cooper S
The Mini Cooper S has the best fuel economy numbers of any car on our Fast and Frugal index index with an EPA city rating of 26 mpg and a highway number of 34 mpg. The Mini's mini-appetite for fuel comes courtesy of a 1.6-liter turbocharged four, which makes 177 bhp. In addition to sub-7-sec. acceleration to 60 mph, the front-drive Mini has great grip and the added bonus of a functional rear seat along with decent cargo-carrying capacity. Although the Mini is not so mini in size, it's surprising that it has only a 10.6-gal. gas tank, the same size as in the Lotus Elise. But thanks to its superior fuel economy, the Mini has a maximum range above 350 miles and yet still comes in under $45 when it's time to fill 'er up. The go-kart handling of the Mini has won the car many kudos, but now with gas prices reaching new highs, perhaps the car will be as well known for its economy as it is for its performance.

But...the article is incorrect on several of the specs though (highlighted).Being a MCS owner I caught that when I read the article when I got that issue in the mail.Plus the posted comments in that link mentioned the same thing as I saw.

Nonetheless it is great to see continued recognition for the MINI Cooper from popular car magazines.

Click the link for the entire article of the cars chosen.

I read that article. I think the MCS came in 8th or 9th in their index, but they really should have used the MC, which compares in performance to the other cars they compared (except the 'Vette, which doesn't belong). The top 3 were all hybrids of course. There was a VW diesel. If they use the MC then Mini would have been way up there near the hybrids in terms of being frugal.

"and the added bonus of a functional rear seat"

I've only had my Mini for 2 days, but I can't imagine putting anyone back there except maybe a small child. With me sitting comfortably in the drivers seat, there is about an inch of leg room in the seat behind me. Not that I care....I still love the car!

These reviews tend to mix the MC and MCS stats.
It happens on plenty of models with multiple trim lines.

Maybe the online story is different, but most of the cars they tested were not low end models, the Soltice, Elise are high end varients.

Maybe they were referring to the MCCS rear seat..which is VERY function able! I which they would include the MCCS in these comparos, since the numbers are virtually the same.

In addition to the Cooper S, included were the Corvette Z51, BMW 135i, Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Lotus Elise SC, Audi TT, Nissan 350Z Nismo, Pontiac Solstice GXP, Honda S2000CR, and Mazda MX-5. Definitely no hybrids.
