That all depends on the state where you register it. In Colorado, as long as you owned the car in Europe for 6 months, then you don't pay any sales tax. When I brought my Saab back to Kentucky, I had to pay 6% based on the current blue-book value. It is all crazy!
Good thing I didn't know about that when I went through Landstuhl or I'd have had to have gotten one. Was just there for ten days and didn't see anything but out the window.
I'll be in Italy for a while, so I won't be paying import fees...
