Alpaca Picnic Parade
Alpaca Picnic Parade
Saturday October 11th
Should be sunny and nice, and they're expecting us around 11:30 a.m. I have the shelter at the park reserved 10am-3pm.
Channel 20, sub channel 20 if you have an FRS radio.
I'll hand out directions at the school, and M2C2 guys need to sign the waiver before we depart. Everybody drive carefully and I'll see you tomorrow!
Okay, a bear stole my picnic basket, and all I have left is cookies. So...please bring whatever you'd like to eat for lunch, or you can run into Asheboro if you'd rather, and I'll have cookies and bottled water on hand for all. I picked up some metal stakes now with little white flags and nice red ribbons to mark the route and will do so that morning, prior to the run.
I know gas is expensive and the economy uncertain, so I'm just asking for the shirt off your back. ;-)
Let's help the Speedway Children's Charities? http://www.speedwaycharities.org/
You can do this two ways, bring a monetary donation, checks made out the them, and an old t-shirt! That's right, we're going to make a quilt out of old MINI t-shirts to hold a raffle to raise money for this worthwhile cause.
This drive will be a family friendly and reasonably paced drive. Just because it's leisurely doesn't mean it can't be scenic. We'll meet at Hopewell Elementary on Welborn Rd just off I-85 exit 108, at 10 a.m. arrive at the Alpaca Ranch by Noon and picnic or depart from Highway 64 near Asheboro.
Mike and Teresa Johnson, the proprietors welcome us to their Caraway Alpaca Ranch. They are very nice. Besides the operating ranch with Alpacas and Great Pyrenees, we'll see their geodesic huts among the rolling hills and a find a gift shop in the main building. I picked up a hand knitted shawl (for the wifey) and some socks from them. You'll find something you like to stay warm this winter!

To far for me to drive, but I'm sure you'll enjoy the ranch. A close friend has 12 Alpacas ( A mini ranch I guess you'd say) and they are our towns favorite drive-by. Oh, and they are not prone to spitting, they are very timid but curious as well. They are pretty much defenseless,Llamas and sometimes Dogs are raised with them as "body guards".
Sorry for stomping in on your thread. Have fun!

spitting
Not sure about alpacas, but llamas really only spit if they're fighting or to show dominance. Also, that's how they know if the females are pregnant - a few weeks after breeding them, they put them in the pen with a male. If they spit, they're pregnant. I swear I didn't make this up - we toured a llama farm last year and that's what they told us!
This really sounds like a lot of fun....AND my wife thinks she would like to come along too and finally meet some of my new MINI friends! Put us down for 2....and we will be driving the yet unnamed but always exciting, "Coop!"

I'll match it...of course, I'm the organizer so I'd better, right?
Regardless of the amount, all donations are appreciated and do not have to published, and everybody has a shirt they can sacrifice, don't they?

me too
I don't have any old Mini shirts, but I'll definitely find something with the logo to donate and match the challenge laid down by Luke. I have invited a friend at work who has a new Clubman (black over nightfire red). His wife also has a salt and pepper coupe.
Anybody interested in motoring up from Charlotte together? I have an excellent breakfast suggestion - Plenty of free parking and lots of good grub. It may be a good way to start the weekend. Let me know.

I think I have a T-shirt that "mysteriously shrunk"
in the laundry....as I am quite certain that I would "not have outgrown it!"
I would also be happy to match Luke's challenge and throw in $20 for the Speedway Children's Charities. Tamara and I are planning on driving to the Alpaca Ranch from Davidson, but we would love to meet up with you, Steve and Lynda....and as many others as possible for that matter....and motor on over to Asheboro together. Just let us know where you want to meet up and we will see you there!

BREAKFAST
Greetings all!
My original plan was to eat in Charlotte, but I understand that may not work for our Davidson friends. There are several good breakfast spots northbound on 85 from here. Porky's in China Grove and the Checkered Flag in Salisbury come to mind. We can talk more at the meet and eat in August. We're going to Ridemakerz next week with the Columbia crowd. Lynda's up for any excuse to get to the beach.
Let's hear from anyone else interested in breakfast.

Did a dry run Sunday. It's a fun drive! Updated the directions and sent the money/form to reserve the shelter 10am-3pm today.
The gentleman at the "Fish Camp" gave me a scrap of paper to write the Parks Dept phone number. Turned it over and it has an Angel and reads:
"Never drive faster than your Guardian Angel can fly..."
Good thing mine acquired a fighter jet when her wings wore out so many years ago. ;-)

First of all, I must apologize....Tamara and I had every intention of motoring to Asheboro for the Alpaca Ranch outing. However, at the last minute (and in true USAirways fashion), I was unexpectedly placed in ground school for a different airplane so we will not be able to go on this trip.
Unfortunately, training for the Airbus is between 11/2 to 2 months in duration so I will literally be "tied-up" until the end of November.
However, my offer to donate $20 and a shirt for the Speedway Children's Charities still stands. Luke, how would you like me to get the money and the shirt to you? Perhaps you could send me a PM with your mailing address and I can send them to you.
Hope you all have a great time at the Alpaca Ranch and we will look forward to meeting up with everyone again soon.

Sorry you can't make it, and working as a Wachovia employee, believe me, I understand how work can screw up your personal life! ;-0
Hopefully every else who's signed up can find gas and find their way to join us!

o.k. don't forget to bring some food to picnic and also a used MINI T shirt and some moolah for the charity. Saturday will be here before you know it and gas will not be a problem. I saw gas every where today and drove by the tank farms and the tankers were linned up trying to get in for fuel. See ya saturday!
Dave, you might better un-highlite me; I didn't read the instructions close enough until now; did not realize how far from Charlotte the ranch was; from Columbia that's a 3.5 hour drive each way; being retired and watching the market every day (mistake #1) makes me feel real guilty about 'fun' spending just now. With "BOO" weekend after next, I'm thinking we'd better skip this one (man, I can't believe I'm doing this...it sounds like the 'nicest' one that's been put out there in a long time). Have fun and motor safely. Hope to see you all in Gatlinburg.

..... No I will just leave it alone.....
