R55 MINI Cooper Clubman: Is the joke wearing thin?
MINI Cooper Clubman: Is the joke wearing thin?
As long as MINI keeps the base car design intact, they can tinker as they like to find more market share.
For me the Clubman was a nice compromise...bit more room and still the features that attracted me in the first place.

I felt compelled to add a comment
"The joke wearing thin appears to be on the journalists who are unable to get it. Apparently the mainstream (read nationally syndicated) writers are too obtuse to realize that a MINI that retains all of the virtues of the original whilst becoming real-world useful is a slam-dunk. If they’re wondering what to look for as evidence of this aerial artistry, look no further than the waiting list for the Clubman. We’re talking 2-3 months for the S models…"

Another "Amen" from the amen corner!
And yes, I think these reviewers are not really aware of what reality is in sales. I actually emailed the Fox News Car section and suggested they read up a bit on what sales have been doing.

MINIs are more than just transportation. Some people don't need to do more with the experience of getting from a to b. Some people just see a small car.
Part of me wants the whole world to wake up and "get it". Another part of me wants this to be, well, uh, our little secret, I guess.
I envy everyone who can go out and drive their cars now.

I really don't understand reviews like this. For some, there seems to be a built-in bias against the Clubman. Why, I don't know. I have owned many kinds of cars from Toyotas, 12 cylinder Jags and most recently, SUVs (GMC Yukon and Dodge Durango). My take on the Clubman has been just the opposite.
I admit I was initially driven to the MINI because of the current gas situation, however, when I test drove it, I was literally, floored. In fact, I actually made myself go back and test drive it 3 separate times because I had such trouble believing that I liked it as much as I did!
IMO, the MINI is a totally unique automobile. It looks tiny from the outside, but everyone is stunned by the room inside. It gets fantastic mileage, but is spunky as hell and can out-run most other cars on the road. It has common touches that I would have never anticipated! I still marvel at the DSC that holds the car on a hill when you are starting from a stop, and the quirky interior night lighting!
All I know is I am overjoyed with my Clubman and would buy it again in a minute. I really don't think these writers know of what they speak!

I love having a unique car on the road. I love the heads that turn as they pass by me at a stoplight. I love that people come up to me on the right side on the interstate and give me the thumbs up. I've always really liked the car I was driving at the moment. But this is the first car that I have loved. I suspect there's people that feel this way about their Toyota Corolla, too. And ya know what? That's what makes the world go round.
This guy is certainly entitled to his opinion, and I am entitled to mine.
Methinks it's time to motor on some twisties and get that perma-grin...
It would be an interesting exercise to dredge up some of the original reviews of the coupe. I'd hazard a guess that they were equally "mixed".
What these dodos don't understand is that there's really no competition for the MINI. There is no luxury sub-compact/compact available. The Honda Fit is a great and fun car - but it's lacking in the luxury dept. What else is there in the MINI's size? Aveo? Versa? Is the GTI a direct competitor? - not really...
Where else can you get a small car that will run circles around most performance cars but will get 30+mpg? A car that is as at home in the city as it is canyon carving? A car that is chic, sporty, yet functional and yet again - frugal?
Maybe in Europe where they have the Audi A2, and the Benz A-class there would be competition. But here they've got the market cornered.
These so-called car guys need to get with the times before their circulation (newspapers) drops any further!

Reality is, not everybody is going to "get it". The Clubman has personality like nothing else, and it will not appeal to every single person. Obviously, we're all passionate about our Clubmans (men). I totally love mine. Reviews like that don't really bother me because I probably don't like what they drive, either. We can't all like the same thing. My husband did not like my Clubman from the beginning, he says he still does not like it. But he admits that it handles well and is kinda-fun to drive. But then my husband is the type that does not react well to change. He's slowly coming around.
What??
This isn't a technical review at all, it begins by relating a car to child actors. Then it proceeds to criticize the car for not being what the writer personally thinks it should be and references enthusiasts opinion of the previous model.
Just forget the old mini and evaluate the car on its own. Yeah it has some legacy of retro styling and shares a lot of parts. Nevertheless it either is or isn't a car in demand. Did he mention that they are selling so fast that dealers are asking for premiums? I don't think I will be paying any attention to what Alex Taylor III says about anything else.

Hmmm...the writer is a poor communicator.
He didn't drive the Clubman; he just phoned in an article based on a few random facts.
Some writers have quotas and going negative is easier than doing some research.

I had to post a comment on there too. Not sure if it will appear, but I love my Clubman more than any car I've owned or driven. Now that it has just over 2,000 miles on it I am amazed that it is handling and accelerating even better. Never expected that. It really has loosened up and responds to everything I ask of it.
Happy girl here and I'm glad no MINI has to live in that guy's garage. Leaves more for those of us who love them.
Hey, they did use my comment. Amazing. They may not realize the devotion of the MINI family. I'll defend mine to the end and can't wait to get another one someday. A perfect world would be having a MINI of every color and combo.

The new Malibu is pretty competitive in its class.
If I wanted a car that behaved like an adult, I'd buy a GTI or something. The appeal of the MINI is that it doesn't.
Mini needs to start behaving like an adult
This is the first car that I loved in almost 15 years. A whole lotta "like" in between. Like many folks, I spent many years compromising. Not anymore...
Maybe the writer is still compromising.
Can't wait for twisties and perma-grins...
