R50/53 What should be my first MOD
What should be my first MOD
I got my 2005 mini cooper s 2 weeks ago and I need more power. Im used to my rx7 and STI so this thing needs some mods!
I want to know the best mods to increase HP and keep reliabilty and MPG. HELP!!!

I'm going to go out onto a limb and say that a pulley would not accomplish this too well. I would say get an exhaust system. How about dropping weight? Cold air intake also supposedly does wonders for horsepower AND gas milage.
Good Luck
Nick
^ Have not heard of anyone having issues from 15% reduction pulleys, either with reliability or mpg.
Well, some lost mpgs only because the added power becomes addictive and the right foot tends to push down harder.

get out the checkbook and go turbo!!! There's mad powa for ya!
in all reality, the Coopers are momentum cars. with careful suspension sorting, you can maintain better grip through the turn. For me, the Cooper S is a great blend of handling and power. Just enough to surprise the owners of vette's and evo's and the like through the twisties.

Twurbo*
but i would just do S/C pulley, intake and exhaust. but if you want more try this website for some packages

A R56 S owner says 17%PULLEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!! match it with a crank 2% pulley....then the intake shroud to maximize cold air flow, but hell...... what do I know..... I have a turbo.

You will not get that kind of power out of a pulley, exhaust, and CAI without a tune on a dyno by RMW, even then, it is a stretch.
Do not get any more of a reduction pulley than a 15%. The others over spin the s/c and water pump at high rpm, never good for longevity. CAI are for smoothing out throttle responce and adding noise, any power gains are negligable.

Here is where you can find the cheapest "Twurbo" kit. Alta is the only company that produces this kit so far. (that i know of)

just do some research
215 crank hp is definitely achievable with a Supercharger Reduction Pulley, Intake, Exhaust, Injectors and ECU upgrade. Cars with those mods are putting down somewhere in the mid to high 190's at the wheel.
If you want more power, from there you can step to an aftermarket head, thats when the real fun starts happening. For performance cylinder heads, we deal exclusively with RMW. During testing we saw gains of 30 whp from the head alone
and that was on a car with all of the previously mentioned mods (supercharger pulley, intake, exhaust, injectors and ecu upgrade).
Is your car going to be daily driven? If so, I would honestly recommend sticking to tried and true mods, being the ones I mentioned above. Cars with a quality aftermarket head, pulleys and custom tunes (in addition to the other mods I listed before) are putting down almost the same horsepower numbers as the basic twincharge kits promise, but are doing so with much greater reliability. What good is 260whp if your car isn't running properly?

How about everyone just spout off about a buncha crap in this thread (minus a couple of you). OP, posts 3, 5, 6, 7, 10 & 11 are crap
. Welcome to the boards and do your research before listening to a bunch of shade trees (including myself) before modding you car. It will pay off.

Spending just a few hours on this site should give you some good answers, most everyone on NAM ussually does the pully, CAI, Exhaust, and then after that another step is the injectors, crank, etc... I think that is a good starting point, cheap(ish) and reliable and good power and more fun! I think thats what you are going for here. And yes, options are good, just look around there is lots of stuff you can do and dont let anyone tell you thats stupid because its not their car!
I think that you should have CAI done before or at the same as the pulley. If you're going to be forcing more air into the motor its good to get rid of the bottlenecks first (at least the intake, exhaust can wait).

Momentum car still holds true.
I agree with what a lot of people have said. Most of the MINIs I have seen if they have been modded end up with at least a Pulley, CAI, and Exhaust. I think, like everything, people have their favorites and loyalties. I would ask some of the vendors and installers for their opinions also. My preference is Way at Way Motor Works he'll give you the honest scoop on anything he carries (pro & con).
