Yes, I am very interested, as long as it looks good, and we can see pictures before we buy it

I'd like to see an artist's rendering of what it might look like first.
How big and ugly do you want? How much air do you need? Might suck in a bird or two!
Be careful what you ask for.

No not THAT big!

Yikes

A bigger scoop would make it look like a dead fish!

well what instead of a flared scoop, just one that traced the intercooler? still following the general outline of the bonnet, but bigger, opening up further back?

lester

That's not such a good idea. The inverted evo scoop is actually designed to extarct air form the engine compartment - cars like the MCS or WRX have top-mount intercoolers and need scoops designed to force air in. But if you're upgrading to a front-mount.....

In place of a larger hood scoop, I'd be MUCH more interested in heat extraction vents placed behind the intercooler. Ideally something that sloped down to meet the back side of the intercooler which would allow the air to flow through like so:

Alternatively just some normal louver type vents. This would allow the engine to get rid of all that hot air and should make the intercooler more efficient as it would resist heat soak better.

I agree the first option would be hard to do but the second should be easy enough. Some holes in the CF with louvers, you'd just have to engineer it so that you're aware of potential water issues. But it's not like this is a new idea and that should be easy to overcome.

One of the biggest problem with the MCS' top mount intercooler is that the air doesn't have anywhere to flow to once it passes though the intercooler. Furthermore as heat rises from the engine, considering the proximity of the Intercooler the intercooler itself starts to get hot. The above heat extractors should work wonders.

Cheers,

Paul

Oooh...Good Grief We're talking about a measured increase in size. Not a Jumbo Jet sucker If done properly, we could double the volume of air being forced in without being obnoxiously brutal like a pro-stocker. I like mounting the intercooler up front, but then the hood scoop then becomes another El Fako useless drag on the Mini

A bigger scoop is obviously a descent idea (look at the WRX scoop compared to the WRX-STi). But I also agree with the idea of venting air out over the hood. Though, I would not want rainwater pouring down into my engine bay when the car is sitting still.

Anyone seen the scoop in THIS THREAD?
This company sells a modifier for the hood scoop, but it's a little ugly and quite a rip-off at $127US.

I think we need to shim up the factory intercooler and build a funnel from the front grille to the bottom side of the intercooler thus reversing the flow through the intercooler... couple that with a JTCC style vent which flushes to the top side of the intercooler and we have a really decent flow through the cooler...

Does that make sense?

What's really great about Andy's design is that it retains the stock hood design, so we can use the current CF hood. Just need a new bumper and grill assembly.

All the automotive "geniuses" I've spoken with regarding the engine mounted air-air
intercooler on the mini have told me the same thing. --"It's not getting more cold air into
the intercooler that is the problem." They've all claimed the scoop is more than adequate
for the size of the intercooler. It's getting the hot air from the bottom of the intercooler
out of the engine compartment that is the "clog in the pipe" and the weak-link in the design.
Perhaps vents along the back(windshield) side of the hood would be more effective.

Just passing on what I've been told by folks who know...

Cheers!

Why not just take the hood off the car altogether and be done with it?

I agree, louvers similar but smaller than those Silver posted positioned towards the rear corners of the hood might be a good idea. In fact, this is a mod I would consider with the stock hood if somebody developed a kit and a noteworthy underhood/intercooler temp drop was achieved.
