R50/53 Shame shame on mini developer!!
It is a sad day when a calm, dignified, frugal, law-abidin citizen is lured into wicked ways but that day has arrived. After driving a sedate mini-van for the past 10 years, my darlin hubby has completely lost his ever-lovin mind --- tempted into evil ways by the purr of a powerful engine and the gleam of shiny paint. Translation-- he went to the Mini dealership and was a cooked goose from the time he stepped thru the showroom door. We haven't been able to wipe the grin off his face since that fateful day. He ordered an 04 S in chili red/white roof with enough extra goodies to keep the parts department busy for days. It was bad enough that he was mesmerized by the appearance and performance of the Mini, but when he read that the car had a chip to "prevent" it from going over 135 -- well, his head came up like an old hound dog getting the scent. Something in HIS car that was slowing it down!! That was downright unnatural!! Of course, he assured me that he would never ever go that fast, it was just the principle of the thing.
Sigh.
Having been married to this nut for 20 years and knowing his quirks, I rushed to the nearest pharmacy and stocked up on massive amounts of valium and dramamine for myself. Well, that was just the beginning. Now I'm stuck with a maniac who is literally drivin me crazy with his obsession with the new car. Unfortunately, the delivery date is not till October--- so he continues to embarrass me in public by asking complete strangers if they want to see pics of his new baby -- due in 2 months. Since I am on the down side of fifty --- none of your business how far down! - I have been getting some very strange looks. Then he proceeds to whip out brochures and flyers showing "his" mini. After listening to him ramble on for twenty minutes, their eyes have a tendency to glaze over and they begin slipping away amid murmurs of "things to do" and "errands to run." So far, we have lost most of our friends and even a few of our enemies. And he only ordered the car a week and a half ago!! The Mini company should issue warning notices on these matters! If they are going to manufacture such an addictive product, they should take some responsibility for it. So, all wives out there be warned. Don't let your spouse anywhere near the Mini dealership -- it could be very detrimental to your marriage and your peace of mind. Oh, well, time to sign off and take my valium. Drive safe and beware of those dealerships. ps.-- now he is waking me in the middle of the nite yelling about dreams where the ship with his car is sinking!!

Welcome to MCO ! You will love it here! You and your husband are going to fit right in!
I loved your post! Are you sure you are not in my family? or one of my co-workers? I ordered my car a month ago and have to wait until November! I have stopped showing photos but do have a MINI t-shirt and bucket hat that I wear as much as possible. Fridays are casual at my work so it's MINI day for me!

I forgot to mention ....
In the end the MINI may become YOUR car! Allot of spouces who hear all about the car, totally fall in love with it after it arrives. You'll end up taking it places where normally you'd just take your own vehicle!!
a year from now you could be ordering your own!!

Welcome to MCO. Yep, your post pretty much tells it like it is. My wife thought I was nuts also, all I talked about was MINI this and MINI that. I got my MCS about a month ago and you would think the MINI talk would kinda take a break...No Way!
Now she has drove the MCS, and guess what?...She is talking about buying the convertable when it comes out. Now all she talks about is that crazy convertable.
Talk, talk, talk, it's really gettin on my nerves!!!!

>>People cannot share their MINIs. Nope. Can't be done. You will have to buy your own. Of course, he will agree to that but don't be fooled - you'll both be arguing as to what options and mods you want on your MINI!
Welcome to MCO .. it's great to have another humorous addition to the group.
I agree that peeps cannot share their MINIs. Much to my husband's chagrin, he's driven less than 500 of the 16K miles on MY JoeGreen. It's a real personal thing with me ...
Here's to your next shopping trip to the local MINI dealer ...

Great post and welcome to MCO (it is still MCO isn't it?)
After 3-1/2 months I still have the same goofy grin and fanatic devotion to this car..I have what your husband has and beleive me there ain't no cure...the nice thing is that it's a very pleasant affliction/addiction.
You may well catch it your ownself, and if you don't you could always form a support group for those with "matriMINIal woes"
Best of luck for a quick build, smooth seas and many happy smiles fo motoring!

Aloha and welcome to MCO- wow I had to read your post three times before I was sure it was not written by my wife.
I can't tell you how common this is. Maybe he will mellow out over time. Maybe you can enjoy the MINI with him- I've seen couples that have. Pretty cool. There are MINI events and you both can go and enjoy. Thanks for posting- I enjoyed your perspective.

The biggest point of contention in the relationship I am in, is that I "stole" his color. Not true! I was just first to buy a MC (and we both loved PW). He has yet to fulfill his dream of purchasing a MC so for now he vicariously motors through me. If he knew how to drive standard, I might indulge him once in a while. Going to have to give the boy a few driving lessons, but I'm not teaching anyone how to drive standard on Elpy!
Time for you to get one of your own! It will prevent a lot of battles for keys

As I push my mouse across its MINI mousepad and the cursor moves over the screensized PS/B MC on my monitor, I glance to my left at the 15 mixed sized diecast MINI's on top of the bookcase and find I can't relate at all to this post.
In truth, this story is a template for mine- 9 years w/ a minivan to a Feb. '03 delivery of a new Cooper. 4 months of waiting including watching webcam pics of the Panama Canal hoping to see my MINI come through on its way to the west coast made just about any conversation end up turning to my automotive obsession, which is now just slightly reduced in severity. My wife has been extremely tolerant of me throughout, and we both hit 50 this year. Suppose life from here on will be measured in BM and AM years (before and after MINI). Thanks for sharing.

Lovely tale but I cannot relate. I skipped that waiting thing by finding a used one at a not very local nissan dealer. and my spouse no longer wants to ride with me in the mini, she thinks I drive too fast.
( I don't really go too fast I've never had it over 100)
