ok here is the big question. jan will be close enuf to the area tuning soon and i am wondering if on a non s cooper it is worth the $$$. there is the lightened crank pulley, K&N filter charger and borla cat back on it. will it be a REAL noticable difference if i have him do it?
Sure, why not? Granted, you won't see the 30+ HP gains that the R53 guys see but these should be a definite something. I say go for it and let us know. I'd be curious as to what he could do with a R50 myself.
Looks like some good gains to me. Plus I bet the car pulls up the rpm ladder a lot smoother. I had my GP done and the difference is awesome.
Try it - you'll like it.
I have a question for the master: why is the after tune graph so much more linear in power as compared to before? And am I reading that as a gain of 4.8ft/lbs and 10.6hp?

yes at the "max" values....
where the car really picked up was everywhere else
its much faster and easier to drive now as the power delivery is much more linear
if your car runs really really smooth you probably won't see these gains, but if your cars driveability is ok, you should see a much better graph and power
there are some unique resonances in the stock intake system that affects the curves and take some time smoothing out
I would consider my car to be smooth but am really unsure. I've never had a ride in another R50, much less a modded one. My car feels like it pulls with no trouble but I might just not be feeling that it isn't.
are there any other modifactions that you would recomend before getting the tune done? i would be sorta rushed cause i think you are in the are in like two weeks but i could try. i still plan to run it daily
^^^A tune up and an oil change is always a good idea. While you're at it, maybe even service the trans. A dyno pull puts stress on a driveline unlike anything a car will ever see. It's the equivilant of pulling a loaded trailer up a steep hill at low speed.
Jan tuned my Cooper convertible, and yes it was worth it. I wanted more low end torque and quicker throttle response, and the tuning gave a noticeable improvement. The difference is easily felt when launching from a stop or driving in city traffic with the air conditioner.

-throttle response
-smoother acceleration
-lower fuel consumption (depends on the conditions)
Also, take good care of your stock intakes.
A dirty stock panel filter can cause a little bit of hp/torque loss.
A new stock panel filter costs very little money and can be replaced with ease.

Mine feels about like the (pre-tune) dyno you posted (get a kick at 4k similar to my friend's s2k when VTEC kicks in).
I don't suppose you'll be in the south-east any time soon, eh?
i dont know how much...if any...the crank pully made. I had it and the intake done at the same time and only slightly after the exhaust. I hope to make it next weekend over the boarder to have Jan tune it but it will depend on the time. If i do i will let everyone know the results cause it should be interesting
Scott, the question was what should be done in preparation for an ECU tune. Why should a crank pulley affect the tuning? For a Cooper, I assume it is a lightened but merely stock size crank pulley.
