Engine's Fan ON after MINI off... ???

Hi all,

Just need some feedback. My 06 MCS (32k-miles) started doing something unusual like 3 weeks ago. After I turned off, the engine's fan starts working like full speed (sounds very loud) for about 3 minutes, even after I lock the car. I was told to take the car to the dealer to check it, but first I want to know if this is usual in other MCS. Maybe I save the trip to the dealer... Every time I go there is very time consuming and worst of all... gas consuming! So I would prefer to avoid going there if I know is something normal. I live in Miami, FL. Currently about 90 degrees...
Thanks for your help.

Check your coolant reservior. I had the same thing happen not too long ago (see "Unhappy Motorer" thread). I found that my cooling fan was turning on because my mini was leaking coolant from the thermostat housing. If I were you I would get it in ASAP or get the parts you need and replace it yourself. Dont forget, Check the Coolant Reservior first!

I always thought the fan worked off radiator fluid temperature. When you turn it off on a hot day the radiator heats up for a while and the fan comes on...by design.

normal on most european cars.when the car's parked in a hot day. the engine temp gets hotter as there is no air flow .

My '03 did this all the time (for the 4 years I had it) in warm weather. I know lots of others that did as well. Didn't seem to be abnormal to everyone I talked to about it.

My 02 mini sometimes stayed on for 10 or 15 minutes at a time late last summer. The reservoir was always full. The dealer explained how to disconnect the fan if it stayed on for too long cautioning me that the fix is a temporary one only if the fan stayed on for longer than 15 minutes. After checking they told me its a $700 fix to replace the fan housing. Gradually as the Boston weather cooled the "problem " stopped. It's getting warm again........

Our 07 was doing this a lot when we first got him, but he seems to have stopped doing that recently.

I'm a little suspisious of the thermostat, the Scanguage has a setting to show you water temperature, and I'm sure it was showing 230F last year. I was taking more notice of that just before his recent service and the water temperature was maxing out at 225F, and when it got that hot, the thermostat seemed to kick in and it dropped to 215F instantly.

Totally normal! Especially in hot weather.. no dealer trip needed is my opinion.

If your coolant is at the right level then this is normal. Two or three minutes is nothing unusual.
