Hi all,

1. It is necessary to clean the top part/all radiator (please refer to the photo) ?

2. How do we clean it - soap water + water + let it dry?

3. How to take it out? Shd be easy job?

Intercooler

Uh, that's the radiator. You own a Cooper and it doesn't have an intercooler.

Just take it to a car wash and blast the bugs out of it if you want to.

I wouldn't take it to the carwash. That'll bend all the fins.
Blow it out with some light air and forget about it.

Lightly soak the radiator with a trickle from your garden hose. This will make all the dead bugs loosen up and less likely to stay stuck to the radiator. Then use your shop vac to suck them out, (avoiding contact with the vanes of the radiator; don't want to bend them...)

Next time you go out to dinner, remember to pick up some toothpics, especially if they are the round type.. Mint doesn't matter! They work wonders for removing radiator bugs but they are also good for reshaping any vanes that aren't as straight as they used to be.. This works very welll. and in most cases it'll be as good as new.

So, I thought that driving in reverse for a while would only take the mileage down on your car. I didn't know it could clean the bugs out as well. Man have I been wrong.

Use #2395 for Silly Putty.

Actually, using tape to pull the bugs out works well too. Me, I usually (carefully) use the shop vac.

I'm glad I'm no the only one who goes through the trouble of straightening radiator and intercooler fins.

Confession - I'm a fin straightener, also.... I almost sued for mental anguish after seeing so many bent fins at the MOTD car show...

Now I KNOW you wouldn't use toothpicks when this tool exists:

In Arkansas we use duct tape. In fact, we use duct tape for everything. Heck, if you can't fix it with duct tape, it ain't worth fixin.

What about the intercooler inside? should we tear apart the intercooler and clean the sludge build up inside. just wondering if that would work instead of a oil catch can? i still want a catch can but should i do this before i put it on?

Just wash it out with a hot water/dishwashing detergent (Dawn), and rinse with very hot water. The very hot water will dry out faster.

Just be sure to rinse out all of the soap!

I rinse mine out once a year or so with acetone - with great results.
