How to lock the car without the key?

Is there a simple way to lock up the car when you don't have the key with you? I tried opening the driver's door and then pressing the lock button in the door down before closing it, but the button won't budge with the door open. (I didn't try it with the passenger door, though).

Wouldn't pressing the lock button on the dash lock the doors?

I tried that, but with the car off, it didn't appear to do anything. Plus, I'd have to do it with the door open so that I could actually get out of the car afterward, and the doors seem unable to lock while they're open (at least, the lock button on the door won't move down if the door's open).

I think the lock mechanism is disabled (more or less) without the key to prevent you from locking it inside.

I can't check it now, because I just sold my 2004 to get my 2008. I remember that if you lock the driver side door from the passenger side and then lock the passenger and close the door, the doors will remain locked.

Yeah... that seems like a rational British approach to door locking.

you can not lock it with the driver door open, you can however lock it with the driver door closed and passenger door open. also if your windows are down and even if the dirvers door is unlocked you can not reach in and unlock the passenger/hatch unless you open the driver door

+1 -- this is true also if trying to lock with the key (passenger door can be open but driver's door must be closed)

I think you could while inside the car lock it with you inside, then climb into the back and kneel in front of the rear seat and lift it up and pull the emergency boot releae, then open the boot and climb out and close...it will remain locked,..... I think.....easy

Yes, but if you have the alarm, it will go off when you crawl around in the car after
you lock it, unless you lock it "twice" and disable the motion detector.
It will also go off when you open the boot.

Lock the doors but leave the boot open. Then climb out the boot and close it, that will lock up the boot as well. This is how I locked my keys in my car at an AutoX.
