i would love to get the logo of the Beatles on the top of my new Mini.. You know the one that is on Ringo's bass drum... either that or the cover of their first release in America called Meet the Beatles where they are half in shadow and half out..

What more British and fitting to celebrate than the worlds greatest band ever??

now the tricky part... how to get that done for the roof...

The trickier part, is copyright laws. No shop can legally reproduce the art for you. They're bound by copyright laws.

We sometimes get customers that want us to make copies of pages from a book, and we can't do it.

Gromit, do you know if an antique map out of a book from the 1600's could be done? Or is it then in the publisher's domain?

That's probably true, unless some museum is still maintaining ownership. An ancient map would probably be safe.

I'm a professional graphic arts supervisor. I have to know these things, and since I create art also, I also know the laws to protect myself.

You can do anything you want, print anything you want as long as you do not use it for or create a situation where there is payment or profit from the use of that item.

Never said the OP couldn't do what he wanted. But the graphics shops that produce the vinyl sure as heck can't do anything the customer wants.

If the OP has his own workstation and vinyl plotter/cutter, then by all means!

With so much piracy going on, I guess it's perceived as the way of things. "It's all good (as long as I don't get caught)"

You know all those Calvin figures of peeing in a Ford or Chevy emblem, or praying? It's all piracy and theft. The artist never licensed the likeness. So Bill Watterson has been getting ripped off for years. But hey, if it looks cool, who cares? Right?

I would be more than happy to pay for whatever fees I needed to.. The Beatles logo means a great deal to me and being the car is British built, it would be even cooler

Seriously....unless big money is involved, no one is going to care. Unless you're Ford.

We are talking about RIAA. The same people that sue individuals for illegal downloads.

All that has to happen, is a photo of the graphic appear in a magazine, and look out.

Of course, there is also the moral issue of stealing/using someone else's work, but let's not go there, hey? (umm, Gromit801. That's not a claymation-kinda dog in your logo, is it?)

It is, but Gromit801 actually went to the trouble of getting Aardman's permission to use it, which is the right thing to do, even if it's not for profit/commercial use.

My old squadron did the same thing when we wanted to use the "leaping Hobbes" from Calvin & Hobbes as the nose art on our planes. Even though it wasn't for commercial use, it would have been wrong for us to appropriate someone else's artwork to decorate our planes.

Fortunately, Bill Watterson had no problem with it at all.

Two things: Firstly -Yay! for Gromit801. I got nuthin' but respect for him. (and his artwork is good, too)
Secondly -I miss Wattersons work so much it hurts. I've got all of his books, and my two kids were nicknamed 'Calvin'(Megan) & 'Hobbes'(Gabe). They grew up with me reading those to them and I think it had a lot to do with how great they turned out. Thank you, Bill.

Thank you. I actually did shoot Aardman an email and got their ok.

My main point is not that someone is showing someone else's work, but the shop that produces the artwork is violating copyright laws every which way there is, because they're doing it for profit.

I saw those yesterday at Mini Mania. I know Led Zeppelin has licensed their logo for t-shirts and all kinds of stuff. I don't know that Apple Corps. has.

btw Gromit801, my daughter is a graphics artist and someone making money off someone else's art really, really gets her panties in a bind... for which I'm justifiably proud.
And as far as I know, Apple Corps is so tight with their licensing, that you have to be Bill Gates to afford it and probably give up your first-born.
