How to spend less time on the forums?

I really enjoy the forums here, but I spend too much time reading stuff. In one day there are about 10 pages (default number of posts per page) under "New Posts".

Is there a way for me to see just new threads?

1. I already can see what I've subscribed to.
2. I am not interested in threads that I've already seen and have new posts.
3. I'd just like to see new threads since my last visit.

I've tried doing different searches, but I can figure out how to do wild card searches. Is that even possible? It seams like you can't search by date only, you also need a title. I must be doing something wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I've gotten a lot from NAM, but I've gotta cut back on the time I spend here

Why, what else is important?

Not sure what searches would be good. I just view new posts off and on as the day allows.

Of course, off-topic can be real addicting and bad for your sleep or job.

rw, I'm moving this from Off Topic to Site Feedback. You'll get more responses to your question there.

Are you trying to say something about the denizens of OT, Clo?

This is a valid request and I'd be interested in having this function as well. I regularly visit the detailing section and therefore see the new threads there, but once in a while there are really interesting threads that appear elsewhere that I've missed.

It would be nice the have a list of the latest new 50 threads or so.

In the Title Bar under the Quick Links dropdown is a Todays Posts option. Selecting Todays Posts will bring back everything in chronological order since your last visit.

I posted a thread earlier asking about and RSS feed for NAM, but didn't really get a response. The RSS feed would be perfect for this as a feed could be setup that just posted new threads. Most of the other forums I frequent have this ability. There are several online feed readers (as well as many more stand alone apps) but I prefer Google Reader. You can subscride to the feeds from other sites and have every thing collected via Google Reader. Then you just have one site to check rather than all of them.

Horatio. What a great idea, using Google Reader for this. I'm going to go check it out to see how it works. Thanks for posting!

i just searched the site FAQs and found out how to limit the RSS feeds on a per forum basis:

To access the feed just use the following URL: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...s/external.php To restrict it to one or more forums use the following: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...?forumids=8,16 In this example the RSS feed is composed of only MINI Talk and Performance Mods. To get the ids of the forums just click on the "Forums" link in the Main Menu and then hover your mouse over each of the forum links you are interested in. In the url you will see something like "f=8". The 8 is the id of the forum. As long as you create the URL as above you can have multiple RSS feeds coming from the site.

This is almost to good to be true. It is so much more efficient! What a time saver! I hope RSS is reliable.

Here's what I am doing.
1. Scan new posts inside Google Reader
2. If there is something I want to read more than the first post on, I just go to the NAM page or I "star" the post in Google to look at it later.
3. If there is a post I want to follow, I just subscribe to it as I usually would and get email when there is a reply. I then go to NAM to read it when I get email saying there has been a reply.
4. In Google reader, when all finished, I mark all as read so they don't appear any more.
