I am a 1st time MOTDer and was wondering what those of you who got rid of your RunFlats are doing for the long road trip to MOTD this year. Ive never taken my MINI on a trip more than 200 miles since i got rid of the runflats on my MCS (17" rims) last summer.

The question is should i bring one of my 15" winter rims w/ a Blizzak that will get me to a tire shop or should i just depend on the Fix-a-Flat and AAA service????

Just wondering what those of u who are in the same situation are doing.

 

Im in the same boat, its my first trip to motd and I dont have runflats. I have 2 bottles of fix a flat and a plug kit with pliers. I hope I dont have to use either but thats my back up. IF you can bring a spare do so. A spare is much more of a sure thing than a fix a flat.

 

Small plug kit and a Greenslime fix kit should be all you need unless you have the tire come apart, then it's Mini roadside or AAA. Remember just because it is a run-flat that doesn't mean the tire will not come apart and you would end up in the same place. That is one of the reason the Roadside assistance program exist.

 

I got a can of fix a flat, and I am gonna grab a plug kit just in case... I went to Georgia and somewhere in Tenn. we developed a flat.. Lets just say its hard to change a tire with 18 wheelers feet away, and you have a broken wrist :D

 

You can get a nice small compressor at an auto parts store and a patch kit. Mine fits in the little storage area in the boot. Just plug the tire and inflate it.

Dustin, everything I have ever read about using slime makes a big point of getting the tire properly repaired and the slime cleaned out within a few hours. If that is done, there is no problem with using it. Sorry you got bit by someone not so honorable.

 

The big problem with tire repair stuff is the solvents in the canned solutions like fix-a-flat... many tire places won't even try to repair a tire that has been fix-a-flatted. Slime shouldn't present that issue.

I'd call a local club member who has winter tires and see if you can borrow one from 'em to strap down in the boot. That or someone who hits the track and has track tires (non-r comps). I've got a set of each rolling around and offered the non-r-comps to anyone in my local club who wanted to take along a full-sized spare.

You might also find a cooper friend (a close friend) who might let you take their donut spare out from underneath.

 

I wouldn't rely on any type of roadside assistance. There is a large portion of the area that has no cell phone service. AAA isn't much help if you can't call them!

I would bring one of the winter tires as a spare. You never know when you might run across a nasty pothole or have a blowout. Slime and plugs won't help you much then.

Also, remember, the movie Deliverance was filmed near the Dragon. If you hear banjos, run!!!!

Just got back from a 1,900 mile trip. I have non-runflats, no spare, and a kit you can buy at Wallyworld for 20.00. Its made by Slime, and includes the can of slime, and a pretty nifty little air compressor. Plugs right into the rear aux. jack, and works surprisingly quickly for its size. Plus it comes in its own case. Like others say, if your tire comes apart you will have to call to get help!

 

Around those parts, it's called the "Ned Beatty Classic".... SOOOOOOWWEEE..

 

After watching the guys clean out the tires, I can see why they wouldn't mess with it. If you have a plug kit, you really don't need a slime type product for 99% of road side repairs. If you have an extra winter tire I'd bring that too.
