can you change steering wheels?

I was told at the dealer that you cannot, (hey, what do they know, you are the experts!) that you cannot take a car with a non multifunction steering wheel and add one later (they did say you can on the 07 and later cars) but whats your take on this, can I take a 2006 MCS and change from a non MF wheel to a multi function wheel?

cheers. Peter

Everything would have to be wired together for the wheel to work the radio and such. It could be done but you're looking at waaayyyyy too much $$$ for it to work properly.

Sure you can and lots have.

If you have a 3 spoke wheel it's very easy. MINI has a retrofit kit P/N 65-71-0-395-006 that has the harness required and the inserts with the buttons.

A 2 spoke wheel is a bit harder, you'll need to get a 3 spoke wheel and air bag along with the kit. Just more expensive.

Often you will see 3 spoke wheels for sale in the Marketplace from people that have changed to a JCW type or even a MOMO or Sparco wheel.

Okay, I believe I have the three spoke, having the car such a short time I have not commited these details to memory. Airbag is cetainly on the car.

do I need to buy the wheel with the buttons off ebay or can I use the existing wheel?

Very cool and thanks for the answer.

I felt that with most cars these days they wire them all the same, thus they don't need a new wiring harness for a car that comes along with some other extras down the assbly line, I remember they were doing this with hondas, no a/c? don't worry its already wired.

I have to check out the part number you mentioned. If anyone has done this changover I would LOVE to hear from them.

thanks. Peter

Hmmm, found this site.

I appears I can make the change as mentioned,

Here is a neat site that gives you part numbers by looking at what car you have and what part you are hunting.

Take off the back end of the addy for the home page.
