So i bought the like $50 airfilter (not the kit kind but the square one that simply replaces the stock) Anyways they advertise better mpg and hp, well i cant measure hp off hand but my mpg did not go up at all and you should have seen the stock filter i replaced after i just bought my 2003 off some1, grimy as hell not jsut brown but black. so I was like oh nice now I'm going to get even better mpg.... NOPE
Any1 else install this product and notice no difference?
Using your stock setup your probably not going to notice any difference. The stock air box is restrictive. But you are getting better air flow and you never have to get another one again. Just wash the K&N and your set.

All the time, but it's not the filter's fault. You're only going to get a noticeable improvement in fuel economy or power after swapping in an aftermarket air filter if the stock filter was seriously restricting airflow, and the simple fact is that the stock MINI filter flows a lot of air (even when filthy).
I have a 2008 Cooper 6 speed, with 700 miles on it and I an getting just under 37 mpg. The trick is to keep your speed under 65 in 6th gear and to keep the rpm under 2700.
I've had problems with the reusable filters also. My GS300 had one and it plugged up in less than 3 months. I don't mind cleaning it, but I'd rather replace it annually rather than go through the oily mess of recleaning it.
My Miata had one and the oil from it ended up setting off the CEL. I cleaned it and reset the light, no problem, but again, kind of a hassle. I gave up and just change them often instead.

It probably is making a difference but not very easily measurable and not noticeable. That said if flows much better than the stock filter still giving excellent protection. I clean and re-oil it every 10,000 miles at every other oil change. On the 0. It’s easy to remember and is now routine. I am very happy with it and they are proven over years of use.
I think Der Abt has done some dyno tests that show hp/torque increases with the drop-in K&N. Nothing to write home about, but an improvement nonetheless. No miracles in a box, I'm afraid, but it's worth it over the long run.

Well, when you consider the fact that a replacement JCW air filter is $95, buying a reusable K&N for $50 suddenly makes a lot more sense financially...
I get about 16, so I wouldn't be complaining (you do know that the City Milage on these cars from the EPA is quite a bit lower than 28 right?).
Expecting that the efficiency of your motor is going to increase by 10-15% with an air filter is a bit naive yes?
Well, you could always go with cow magnets and "Turbo Air Swirl Inducers". With the price of fuel going up so fast, the market is gonna be flooded with 'snake oil' cure-alls.

Ya but thats for a real city, i live in tucson and my driving does not include any forms of rush hour =)
Nor does mine. Just 18 miles of well-maintained country road with a nice bunch of twisties. Going to work and coming home are the highlights of my day.
For the snake oil cures, Mythbusters did a show on that and found no improvement, and that some made the engine less efficient.
Anyone with a cone kit think it was worth it? What kind of improvement did you see?
I put one in at about 500 miles and I noticed a little bit of difference, but not enough to warrant doing it again. But they do not "suck" any worse than the factory ones, except for the sucker like me that dropped $45 for it
Actually, the 3M light protectors have earned their keep much more than the K&N!
Mass Air Flow, it's what measures the amount and density of the incoming air. They can be, in worse case, ruined, if the oil from the filter hits the meter wire. Usually, it's something not to worry about unless the filter is drenched in it. A lot of cars even have them from the factory. Anything to bring up MPG to show the EPA. And as far as the OP not seeing a difference, the car probably has to be driven for a few hundred miles for the ECU to sense the increase in airflow and adjust fuel and spark. Believe me, I've sold enough and had enough people request them to believe the hype. I had 1 person ('tard in a truck) claim it ruined his MAF sensor. 1 out of probably 500 i've sold.
