just bought my first mini (2005 's') love the car, amazing gas mileage and fun. i just sold my 96 gsr for this and wouldn't turn back but i have some questions.

the "ticking" at idle...hoping its not needing a valve adjustment at 24xxx miles. normal?

and only other question i had was anything i should know about this car so i dont learn the hardway?

The ticking is more than likely just injectors firing. They are fairly noisy. As far things to know, there are a few. With an S, keep an eye on your blower belt and tensioner. Like with any car, keep up on maintenance ad you'll be good. You're in the right place for questions. Oh, and these cars are way addictive.

the valves are self adjusting, using hydraulic pressure from the engine oil pump. once in a while on a cold start i will hear a ticking from one valve, which goes away within 60 seconds as the engine gains a bit of tempurature.

i'd be concerned if the noise persists after warm up...

Welcome rjotmini. I bought my MCS last June and am still downright giddy! I am sure your experience will be the same.

Might be the flywheel. Seems there have been a few issues with a "ticking" sound at idle, that's been traced to the flywheel.

Some have had to be replaced.

Could also be the throwout bearing...

Is the ticking coming from the left side of the car, and does the ticking go away with the clutch all the way in? If so, let the clutch out very slowly. Then put it in again and let it off very quickly. If the noise wasn't there after letting it out slowly, but is there now, then it's probably the throwout bearing being off-center and I wouldn't worry about it.

Then again, I have no warranty. So next time you're at the dealer, just ask them about it, and hopefully they can tell the difference between flywheel and throwout bearing (or any other issue).
